You're a good person for putting a lot of effort into picking something your friends will like. A lot of people just give gifts they'd like to receive and don't really make much effort to choose something that fits the person...even literaly doesn't fit..like giving a size 10 person a size 2 dress - happened to me more than once.

D: Yes, anon. I like putting the effort, because I love seeing my friend's faces when they look at me and think "OHHHH WOW you remembered me staring at this" or "I've needed this..." : D. =( Clothing is a no go zone! It's very personal, and I hope you can just tell them outright that you appreciate the gesture but probably a gift voucher may be better...

You are so nice to go see your ex-neighbor on their birthday and all. The daughter sucks! I hate people like that. I bet your ex-neighbor thinks of you more than her daughter. Well I hope you don't have too big of a surgar rush today and you rock!

Have a great day!

LOL
We, my friends and I “resolved” this “problem” years ago. To avoid… well “wrong” unnecessary presents, returning and unhappy birthday girl/boy we simply buy prettiest card there is to be found and - put money in it :)
Yes, unfortunately there is no surprise effect or pretty paper and bows but this is actually thoughtful gift.
If friend chose something it’s also all right, we somehow silently agree about sum (approximately) so she/he can openly ask for it :)

As for the old lady… what unfortunate moment for her and for you since you were present.
Ungrateful child… what she has done to deserve that I wonder? *tsk*
So you were only guest?

Oh that cake pic looks absolutely yummy!! Have to try make it, there is surely some recipe online *runs to find at least one trustworthy*
