Kyungsoo isn't one for the spotlight. Even as a baby, his mom used to tell him stories about how quiet he was while all the other babies would cry loudly, calling for the attention of everyone in the room. It’s not that Kyungsoo is shy, although he can be a bit of a wall flower. It’s just that he enjoys being in the background. Life is less troublesome that way.

Which is why he doesn’t understand how he ended up being elected vice president of the student council.

Well, he might have an inkling of an idea.

“Kim Jongdae, I swear to God I’m going to kick your ass.” Kyungsoo marches towards him, fist ready to strike.

“Aw Soo, sweetie, don’t be like that,” Jongdae says, backing away from him, arms up and ready to protect himself.

Kyungsoo gets closer and closer until he’s right in front of Jongdae and punches him in the stomach.

Jongdae yelps in pain and falls to the floor in the fetal position.

“I did it as a joke; I didn’t think you would win!” he splutters.

“Well guess what Sherlock, I won, and now I’m stuck with this stupid title.”

Jongdae sits up, rubbing his stomach, a pout on his lips. Kyungsoo feels no pity.

“Look at the bright side -” Jongdae starts, but Kyungsoo cuts him off.

“Bright side? Bright side!” he screams. “There is no bright side! Now I’m stuck here after school for dumb meetings I care nothing about.” Kyungsoo can't even remember the last time he attended a school related function. So much for school spirit.

Jongdae looks like he’s about to say something but Kyungsoo stalks off, too angry to care if he’s being dramatic.

--

Two weeks later and Kyungsoo decides being VP isn’t as bad as he’d imagined. He gets to walk the halls freely, an excuse ready for when a teacher asks why he isn’t class. “I was just checking ___ for student council,” and they’re gone. It definitely has its perks.

After four days of begging for forgiveness and a promise of free lunch for the rest of the month, Kyungsoo forgives Jongdae. He has such a big heart.

Today’s student council meeting was about the can food drive. Kyungsoo listens where he needs to and writes down notes on who is in charge of what. He usually spaces out and asks the junior ambassador, Jongin, what just happened.

Jongin is a cute kid, who usually blushes whenever Kyungsoo touches his shoulder, or looks at him, or breathes.

Once the meeting is over, Kyungsoo collects his things and rips off the note paper to give it to the President, Kim Junmyeon. He has an almost regal air about him that dissipates as soon as he opens his mouth.

“Here you go,” Kyungsoo says, handing him the paper.

“Oh Kyungsoo, just the person I wanted to talk to.”

Kyungsoo doesn’t like the sound of these words.

“Um, what’s up?” he asks cautiously, ready to run if needed.

“Well, you see. We have a bit of a problem,” Junmyeon whispers, putting his hand on Kyungsoo’s shoulder.

Kyungsoo looks at the offending hand until Junmyeon stops touching him, an awkward apologetic smile on his lips.

“Whats the problem?” he asks, raising a brow.

“There seems to be talk about a certain boy, who uh,” Junmyeon coughs, looking nervous, “keeps a pet in one of the empty art rooms downstairs.”

The wheels in Kyungsoo’s head start spinning. “You want me to do the dirty work,” he says, looking at Junmyeon, who looks almost shameful at being found out.

“I have an appointment to attend to, and you are the vice president, I don’t want to ask anyone else.”

Kyungsoo sighs with the tiredness of an eighty year old man. “I guess I can check it out, but no promises on me solving this problem.”

Junmyeon lights up like a too bright lightbulb. “Thank you so much Kyungsoo! Tell me what happens tomorrow whenever you see me, I really do need to get going now.”

There he goes, Kyungsoo thinks as he watches Junmyeon run out the door. He looks around and everyone's mostly gone, probably eager to get home even though this meeting didn’t run as long as others.

He collects his things and decides to go check out this dog boy in the basement.

--

Kyungsoo never took art as an elective--mainly because the classes were downstairs in the basement and he was too lazy to climb up and down those stairs on the regular.

He finally gets to the bottom floor and walks down the hallway, looking for room 208. He thinks he’s on the wrong side of the building when he hears a small ‘yip’ come from of the rooms, followed by a loud, annoying, laugh.

Ah, Kyungsoo thinks, of course it’s Park Chanyeol

--

Park Chanyeol is one of SM High’s infamous stoner kids. He’s loud and annoying and always walks into class late. Kyungsoo disliked him at first sight (or sniff).

He recalls that the first and last time they had talked was about a year ago. Kyungsoo was minding his own business, waiting for his mom in the student parking lot, when Park Chanyeol had sauntered over.

He had a chocolate bar in his hand and his eyes were a tad bit red. Kyungsoo remembers wondering how Chanyeol could have smoked when school had just gotten out minutes ago.

Chanyeol had said nothing, he just stood by Kyungsoo chewing obnoxiously and looked around.

Kyungsoo himself was wondering why Chanyeol was standing by him, since it was known to everyone that he already had a car--an old Honda Civic with a broken muffler that caused the car to screech loudly whenever he turned it on.

Finally, after what seemed like hours, he received a text from his mom telling him that she was stuck in traffic. Kyungsoo decided that he would wait in the library, maybe ask someone if they’d done the math homework since he himself wasn’t going to do it.

Right when he was about to take his leave Chanyeol had mumbled, “Nice haircut.”

Kyungsoo remember heating up, ears going red at the tips. His brother’s girlfriend had given him a terrible haircut, bangs choppy and he was pretty sure his sideburns were none existent.

“Excuse me?” he’d fumed.

Chanyeol looked terrified as Kyungsoo turned to him, fire in his eyes.

“Uh.” Chanyeol had said dumbly, looking down at him (how dare he be taller than him). “Your ears are red.”

Kyungsoo couldn't help that he blushed easily! It was one of the many things that ruined his devil-may-care image.

He remembers giving Chanyeol a withering look before stomping off.

And that was the great first and final meeting between the two. After that Chanyeol never attempted to get closer to Kyungsoo. He did catch Chanyeol looking at him sometimes, but he chose to ignore it, better to pretend the giant giraffe wasn’t there.

--

“Park,” Kyungsoo says, rather ominously, as he enters the room.

The first thing he sees is Chanyeol’s ass up in the air, wiggling? As he plays with a tiny brown puppy.

“Ah!!” Chanyeol screams, turning around quickly but failing and instead falls on his big (not really) butt.

His eyes are wide as he looks at Kyungsoo. It creeps him out.

“Why do you have a dog?” he asks.

He decides to get straight to the point, better to get this over with as quickly as possible. He has a nice warm bed waiting for him at home. Maybe some netflix...mmm that sounds nice.

Chanyeol coughs, making Kyungsoo realize he was spacing out, a dreamy smile on his face.

“Well, you see…” Chanyeol trails off, looking everywhere but him.

Kyungsoo raises his brow in question.

“My mom is allergic to dogs, but I found little Candy at a park and it was raining, I couldn’t have just left her there!”

Kyungsoo feels a migraine coming on. He walks over to where Chanyeol and Candy are and kneels in front of the puppy.

Its a cute, tiny thing. Fur white and soft and big black eyes that melt Kyungsoo’s heart.

“Hi there cutie,” he coos, rubbing her sides.

She yips happily and falls on her back so he can scratch her belly. Kyungsoo can’t help but smile, she’s so cute.

When he looks up Chanyeol is looking at him, face….pink?

“Are you okay?” he asks.

“Yeah, yeah,” Chanyeol mumbles, looking down “it’s just it took a while for her to get used to me and the guys. She didn’t even attempt to bite you.”

Kyungsoo watches Chanyeol rub the back of his neck, lips pulled into a pout. He almost seems, dare he say it, cute.

He laughs instead, erasing all thoughts of cute and Park Chanyeol from his brain. “Stop being a big baby and tell me how you’re going to take her home today.”

“I can’t take her home! Why do you think she’s here all by herself.” Chanyeol says scooting closer to Candy (and him).

Kyungsoo moves his hand back and lets Chanyeol take over on the belly rubbing. He can feel the heat of Chanyeol beside him, and he instinctively wants to lean in. The basements are cold after all, he tells himself.

He scowls. Does this kid think he’s the human torch or something? How dare he make Kyungsoo want to lean into his warmth!

“Does she have a tag or something? She’s really cute, I’m sure the owner wouldn’t have just left her in the park all alone.”

Chanyeol shuffles nervously. Kyungsoo glares.

“Park Chanyeol, has she had a tag on her this whole time! And you never thought to call the owner!” Why is Kyungsoo not surprised.

“Give it to me,” he says, turning to look at Chanyeol who is still beside him, chewing his bottom lip into oblivion.

Chanyeol looks at him, almost sadly, then looks down at Candy who is nuzzling against his thigh. Kyungsoo feels something stirring in his chest, is it compassion?

“Look, I wouldn’t be doing this if Junmyeon hadn’t personally asked me to.”

Chanyeol glances at him with those big eyes of his (they’re kind of pretty now that Kyungsoo has a chance to see them up close).

“Are you sure you’re not just doing this because you hate me?”

Kyungsoo coughs, eyes going abnormally wide. “What?”

“You always glare at me in the hallways, and I tried talking to you once but you almost ended my life with just your eyes.”

“You were making fun of my haircut!” Kyungsoo shouts, poking Chanyeol’s chest.

“No I wasn’t!” Chanyeol splutters. “I thought you looked cute!”

What. Cute? Him?

“What?” Kyungsoo utters quietly.

Chanyeol turns around completely, no longer at his side but facing him completely.

“I said, I thought you looked cute.” His face is the pinkest Kyungsoo has ever seen, and his lips are all pink and pretty from when he was biting them earlier. He feels himself flush from the proximity, from Chanyeol looking at him like that.

He’s oddly endeared and doesn’t know what overcomes him when his hand curls around the back of Chanyeol’s neck, bringing his head down for a kiss.

It’s chaste, just a press of lips until Chanyeol pulls him forward by his shirt and deepens the kiss. He nibbles at Kyungsoo’s top lip, then his bottom, before nudging at them with his tongue, asking for permission.

Kyungsoo allows it, opening his mouth slightly and sucking on Chanyeol’s tongue, until he can’t breathe.

They pull back, faces flushed, lips swollen red, panting for air.
“Wow,” Chanyeol breathes, using his thumb to clean up the spit at the edge of his mouth. He then sucks on it and wipes the excess spit off on his shirt.

Kyungsoo swallows, watching him, throat dry and heat pulling at the bottom of his stomach.

“Yeah,” he says dumbly.

“I have the tag in my backpack we can call and take her home, I guess,” Chanyeol says sadly, looking at Candy who fell asleep beside them.

“That would be for the best,” Kyungsoo says, standing up shakily.

They gather their things, Candy in Chanyeol’s arms and walk up the stairs. By time they get to the top Kyungsoo is out of breath and cursing their existence.

“Never again will I go down there,” he glares at the stairs in disdain.

Chanyeol laughs, “You’re really cute you know that?”

Kyungsoo knows he’s blushing but ignores it and instead pokes Chanyeol on the chest. “You’re taking me home after we take this little one home, okay?”

“Alright, alright stop poking me! It hurts!”

--

Candy, it seems, belonged to a fellow classmate. A Huang Zitao who was two grades below them. He was hysterical when Kyungsoo called, even more hysterical when they gave Candy back to him. Promising that they could see her whenever and hugging them in thanks until Kyungsoo had to poke him in the ribs to get him to back off.

They’re back in the Chanyeol’s car, making out near Zitao’s home when Chanyeol asks Kyungsoo if he’s ever smoked a blunt before.

“I’m going to ignore that just happened and continue kissing you okay?”

“Alright,” Chanyeol says, smiling into their kiss.
