Prom.

Noun. Informal. One word. Four letters. One syllable.

One day dedicated to overpriced food, clothes, styled hair and shoes. He’ll have to rent some god-awful tux that won’t fit his shoulders (he’s a little narrow), be forced to purchase a meal he probably won’t like and then be forced to dance like a fool with the people he calls his friends.

And what makes it worse is that he needs a date. As in another human being he has to take so he doesn’t look like a loser.

Prom, aka, Do Kyungsoo’s worst nightmare.

Sighing he tears his eyes away from the neon pink paper plastered on the bathroom mirror. Vaguely, he wonders why it’s in the restroom, the men’s room specifically.

For a moment he wonders if he’s even in the right restroom because it wouldn’t be the first time he’s accidentally walked into the women’s room (freshman year when he forgot his glasses), but then he remembers he used a urinal, so duh, it’s the men’s room.

Shaking his head he exits the restroom, entering the hallway which is full of chattering students. Most of the girls are gushing over shopping for the perfect dress, the guys are all muttering amongst themselves about potential dates. The occasional talk about getting shit faced is heard as well and Kyungsoo’s ears perk up as he passes the soccer team.

It’s just because he’s curious as to what the popular kids are saying about prom. It’s not like he cares about prom or about the cute team captain.

Definitely not.

Because, if he were listening, he probably wouldn’t be paying attention to where he’s going. And if he wasn’t paying attention to where he’s walking he would run right into the principal’s son, Kim Jongin.

And then he would be falling flat on his butt, in front of his crush since forever and then have perfect boy Kim Jongin spluttering that he’s sorry causing a scene.

Did he mention now his butt hurts and his pride is completely ruined?

“Its fine,” he dismisses, shooing the younger boy away from him and frowning when he sees the soccer team has already started to migrate towards the cafeteria.

“Are you sure hyung?” Jongin pesters his some more causing him to get more annoyed that he won’t leave him be rather than he made him fall on his ass in front of the Kim Minseok.

“Who said you could call me hyung?” he inquires, his left brow lifting in a questioning manner and Jongin’s entire face turns a light shade of pink.

“S-sorry!” Jongin all but squeaks, bowing three times before hugging onto his books and rushing off in the opposite direction leaving him to sigh dramatically because his life sucks.

“Kyungsoo!”

Sucks even more because now Baekhyun and Jongdae are rushing over to him.

Maybe if he pretends to have a heart attack he can avoid his friends. He doesn’t have time to master fake chest pains before they both sling their arms over his shoulders and lead him to the outside picnic tables.

“Where are we going? The cafeteria is in the opposite direction you ass hats,” he gripes, fighting to get rid of them but it’s futile, they’ve been working out it seems.

“That’s ass hat-hyung, maknae!” Jongdae chirps, squishing his cheek in the process and he has to remind himself about how pretty he is unfortunately is and why he wouldn’t survive jail time to stop himself from murdering his best friend.

“I hate you both and I hope you realize this.”

“We love you too, now, who are you taking to prom?” Baekhyun questions, leading them to a table underneath the giant oak tree before Jongdae reminds him that’s where all the birds shit and then he’s being forced to turn around and head towards the tables near the bleachers.

“I’m not going,” Kyungsoo announces as he sits down, looking around for Chanyeol but finding the friendly giant nowhere to be seen.

“You’re going,” both Jongdae and Baekhyun chorus leaving him to mope.

He doesn’t want to go to prom. He’ll look dumb in a tux and he’ll probably have to take his cousin Jaehwan because he’s hopeless in the romance department.

“Chanyeol’s asking Nana to prom as we speak. We already have bets going on how hard she’ll slap him,” Jongdae states, taking out his sack lunch and handing everyone a bottle of some weird looking milk.

“She could just laugh in his face,” he supplies and both of them pause what they’re doing to give him a dead stare. “Or, she’ll kick him in the dick.”

Both nod their heads in approval. Chanyeol’s aiming way too high.

“Well either way, I think I’ll ask Liyin noona.”

“Jongdae…she’s a teacher,” Baekhyun emphasizes, giving him a long judging look while Kyungsoo munches on his crackers.

“She loves me!” Jongdae protests loudly, just in time for Chanyeol to come moping his way to the table.

Ah, the face of rejection, Kyungsoo notes. This is what he would look like if he asked his beloved Minseok hyung to prom. Expect maybe he’d shed a tear or two because it is Kim Minseok they’re talking about.

“So…how hard did she slap you?” he questions, getting three glares because well, let’s face it, he’s never been sympathetic for anyone but himself.

“She did not slap me!” Chanyeol denies, snatching up the milk left for him. “She laughed in my face and then told me to try again next year.”

“We’re seniors,” Baekhyun states plainly.

“Exactly.”

“Ouch.”

“Well Jongdae’s asking Ms. Zhang so at least you’re not him,” Baekhyun comments, getting an offended scoff from Jongdae.

Chanyeol makes a face, “Dude, she’s ancient.”

“She’s only thirty seven!”

“How do you even know her age?” Chanyeol inquires, looking rather concerned for their friend.

Baekhyun looks genuinely worried as well, because most people forget Ms. Zhang even exists. She’s rarely seen unless it’s during class.

Baekhyun didn’t even know who she was until this year, and he’s worked in the office since he was a freshman. Not once has he even seen her go to the break room for coffee. It’s like she doesn’t exist to anyone other than Jongdae.

“A magician never reveals his secrets.”

The wink Jongdae gives them is obnoxious and gross, Kyungsoo notes. Actually, they’re all just obnoxious and gross in general. He honestly doesn’t know why he hangs out with them.

He should have made better friends on the first day of school freshman year.

“Anyways, we need to find Kyungsoo a date,” Baekhyun is the one to change the subject. “And we need to start planning now. Any suggestions?”

“Well, there’s that Minah girl in gym class that likes him,” Jongdae suggests casually only to get snorted at by Chanyeol.

“Do I really have to come out of the closet again?” Kyungsoo questions plainly, giving Jongdae a long hard look that he’s been told scares people.

“Okay, so someone with a dick, fine, be picky,” the elder waves him off and he glares.

“The only gay guy I can think of is Sehun, do you like Sehun?” Chanyeol questions the youngest of the four.

“No. He called me fat in the fifth grade. Now drop it, I’m not going,” Kyungsoo emphasizes, giving them all a stern look that gets completely ignored.

“There’s Jongin, he’s pretty gay,” Jongdae comments but Baekhyun and Chanyeol immediately shake their head.

“No, Jongin’s not gay.”

“What? He’s totally gay!”

“He’s not, right Kyungsoo?”

“How should I know?” Kyungsoo snaps, losing his patience. He doesn’t want his friends meddling with his nonexistent love life.

He’s been single his entire seventeen years of life. The only kiss on the lips he’s gotten was from a dog in the eighth grade.

And it’s not like people haven’t liked him, because they have. They’ve all just been girls and Kyungsoo learned at a very young age that girls were not for him.

“What if we manage to get you a date, would you go?” Baekhyun questions slyly and Kyungsoo’s stomach is completely unsettled.

“What do you mean?” he questions slowly, eyeing the elder skeptically. Nothing good can come from this, he already knows it.

“If I find you a date, will you go?” Baekhyun questions again, not elaborating at all which is of no help to him.

“I…”

“C’mon Kyungsoo, its prom! Everyone will be there! You can’t ditch us at the prom, we’re your friends,” Jongdae butts in, giving him that ugly pout and tugging on his arm. It’s disturbing, really.

“Only because I forgot my glasses the first day of classes and had to sit in the front with you,” he grumbles, shaking the elder off of him but he returns full force, nearly knocking him off his seat.

“Just let me find you a date, you worry about finding shoe lifts to make you normal height,” Baekhyun remarks causing Jongdae to let out that annoying cackle that sounds like a dinosaur.

Kyungsoo counts to five in his head like his brother taught him before responding.

“Fine. You can find me a date,” he begins, rolling his eyes when Jongdae and Baekhyun give each other a victory high five. “But only if you survive the beating I’m about to give you,” he finishes off, standing up and dusting his pants off.

“A-are you s-serious?” Baekhyun questions incredulously, eyes widening in horror as Kyungsoo gives him that murderous look that could probably kill the devil.

Naturally, his first reaction is to shriek and start running.

--

Prom is two weeks before graduation, so Kyungsoo figures if it ends up ruining his life for some reason, at least he’ll be graduating soon and won’t have to put up with the humiliation his friends are bound to make him go through for that long.

Best case scenario he ends up dateless because Baekhyun won’t pull through. He can deal with that seeing as how he doesn’t want to go in the first place.

Worst case scenario, Baekhyun does pull through and he ends up with a creepy pervert. Because he’s come to accept that there aren’t many gay people in their high school. There are even fewer gay people that Kyungsoo actually would consider date material. Even fewer whom he doesn’t think are beyond creepy.

And Kyungsoo has been doing some investigation work of his own while he begrudgingly rents a tux and buys himself new shoes.

He’s concluded that there are only about four people Baekhyun could be setting him up with.

There’s Oh Sehun, although he’s made it blatantly obvious he doesn’t want to go to prom with a boy who made fun of his chubbiness in the fifth grade. Though, Sehun is quite the looker these days, he has to admit. So it’s an “only if there’s no one else” because then at least he has something nice to look at the entire time.

There’s the school counsel president who swings both ways, Kim Joonmyun. Kyungsoo doesn’t mind him, he’s attractive and smart. A little annoying at times though and he’s a horrible dancer. Kyungsoo’s seen it, unfortunately.

Kim Joonmyun is a maybe. He’d have to sit and converse the entire time and he has nothing to talk about with the elder. So, a maybe. He’d settle for Kim Joonmyun he supposes.

And then there’s the Chinese exchange student, Luhan. Luhan is loud, Luhan is crazy, Luhan looks prettier than most of the female population. Kyungsoo is afraid of Luhan.

He gets way too competitive over everything, and he’s always screaming at people about how manly he is.

He almost cried when a wasp flew into their chemistry lab last year.

Kyungsoo would immediately go back on his word of staying the entire time if he walked in to see Luhan as his date.

And then heaven takes the human form in Kim Minseok. Don’t be fooled because he may seem like your average, baby faced, straight A senior. But in reality he’s so much more and Kyungsoo adores him.

Well, Kyungsoo’s had a crush on him since they were in the first grade and Minseok let him have his purple crayon because Chanyeol was too busy shoving his own up his nose.

If somehow Baekhyun managed to get Kim Minseok as his date, Kyungsoo would probably kiss him.

He doubts it will happen though.

So he goes back to staring at the shoe lifts his brother bought him as a joke a year ago.

--

As prom draws closer and closer, Kyungsoo begins to get suspicious of whom exactly Baekhyun is trying to set him up with.

Of the course the elder refuses to answer any of his questions and laughs when he asks for a hint. Both Jongdae and Chanyeol have been sworn to secrecy as well, leaving him hopeless.

But at least he supposedly has a date for prom. Both Jongdae and Chanyeol are dateless as of now.

“Why don’t you just go with each other?” he suggests as he inspects the cafeteria food. He thinks it’s supposed to be some chicken enchilada casserole, but it looks like meatloaf. Scrunching up his nose he pushes the tray away and remembers he has a granola bar stashed in his backpack.

“I’m too hot for Chanyeol,” Jongdae sasses, flipping his imaginary long locks over his shoulder. Chanyeol looks completely scandalized.

“Well you’re also too short for me you hobbit,” Chanyeol grumbles, getting his ear yanked in retaliation for the comment.

“Says Yoda,” Jongdae snaps leaving Kyungsoo to smirk.

“You know what, why don’t you two just take each other, since you like to make fun of me,” Chanyeol whines with a frown.

Jongdae looks at Kyungsoo curiously, “Out of the three of us, who would you take to prom?”

“None of you,” he replies immediately, glad he didn’t decide on eating the cafeteria food because he would be gagging on it right about now.

“Humor us,” Baekhyun speaks up for the first time. He’s been awfully quiet lately because he’s afraid he’s going to spill who he set him up with.

“I don’t know,” he grumbles, feeling his cheeks heat up as they all stare at him.

Ever since he said he preferred boys to girls they always try and do this.

“C’mon! Just chose someone, we won’t get offended,” Jongdae replies, shaking him slightly and he sighs. If it will make them shut up.

“Chanyeol I guess,” he grumbles, wincing at the victory yell Chanyeol lets out and sighing when they all start to argue.

He spends the rest of the lunch period staring at Kim Minseok and watching him stuff his face with food. He looks like a hamster. Kyungsoo wants to squish his cheeks and kiss him and adopt a cat together.

Sighing he drags himself to his next class, already dreading prom.

--

The big day finally arrives and Kyungsoo lies in bed for a good two hours before his big brother is barging into his room telling him to wake up.

“Rise and shine cupcake!” Seungsoo shouts, pulling the covers from his bare legs and he glares, wishing he had a sister that he could complain about boys to instead.

“I told you to knock, asshole,” he grumbles, sitting up and hugging onto his pillow because he feels like he’s going to puke from nerves.

“I’m older than you, I can do whatever I want,” Seungsoo sasses him, throwing a pillow at his head and he lets himself get knocked back onto his bed. Maybe he can play dead.

“Get up.”

“No. Leave me to rot.”

“If you don’t get up I’m telling mom.”

Kyungsoo glares at the triumphant smile on his brother’s face. That jerk.

“Why was I cursed with you as a brother?” he grumbles, sitting up again and yawning while attempting to fix his bed hair.

“You were blessed to have me as a brother because I’ve agreed to take you to get your hair done. No need to thank me or anything.”

Kyungsoo rolls his eyes, “You just want to flirt with girls,” he accuses and Seungsoo grins.

“Well duh, now hurry up and put some clothes on.”

Kyungsoo sighs, getting up from his bed before heading towards his restroom. He fails to notice a stray shirt on the floor. He slips on it and lands on his nose. And that’s the start of his day of hell.

Seungsoo laughs for a good five minutes while calling him ru-dol-ph, as a play on their last name. He fails to find the humor in it.

The stylist thinks it’s a good idea to distract from his now bruising nose with an up do.

He feels like a rooster.

And as if his day couldn’t get any worse he burns his tongue on the kimchi fried rice his mom makes him for lunch, cuts his finger on a can of soda, and somehow can’t find his contacts leaving him to wear his glasses.

He doesn’t think his day can get much worse at this point.

It does when Seungsoo finds it fitting to give him the talk.

“Hyung, please, I beg you, don’t,” he emphasizes, seeing a very descriptive diagram on the family white board.

There’s an hour left until six when prom starts and his big brother is doing the unthinkable; trying to talk to him about sex….gay sex to top it off.

“Hey! I actually did research on this like the great big brother I am!” Seungsoo whines at him and Kyungsoo wants to cry.

“Now apparently you need condoms, which I was surprised about, because you know you can’t get pregnant.”

“Please stop talking,” Kyungsoo begs, moving to rub his eyes and knocking his glasses off his bruised nose. He winces as he tries to put them back on without causing more pain to himself.

“But apparently you do!” his brother is beaming, looking quite proud of himself. Kyungsoo wants to knock him out.

“I’m not having sex with anyone!” he grits out, willing himself to be patient because he assumes his brother googled gay sex. He was probably mortified and he at least owes it to him to let him have his moment.

But this is too much.

He still doesn’t even know who his date is. His friends actually managed to keep it from him and he’s impressed. He won’t ever tell them that though.

“It’s prom, you’re guaranteed some kind of action,” Seungsoo shrugs, handing him a packet of lube.

He feels his ears heat up as he stares at it. It’s flavored.

“Now, if you need to know how to use that-

The doorbell cuts him off and Kyungsoo thanks the lord, saying bye and dashing for the door, hugging the first person he can grab.

“Thank god, hyung was about to start talking about lube!” he wails, tightening his hold on Baekhyun? Jongdae?

They’re tiny so it has to be one of them.

Someone clears their throat so he looks up to see Jongdae looking ready to burst into laughter. Looking to Jongdae’s right, he sees Baekhyun and a girl along with Chanyeol and Sehun?

Well then who is he hugging?

Hesitantly he pulls away, eyes widening as he sees none other than Kim Minseok.

As in the Kim Minseok. The one he’s had a crush on since basically forever. Minseok.

Minseok is his date.

He just hugged his date and talked about lube.

Naturally, his first reaction is to shriek and shove him.

“What the hell!” Baekhyun yells, moving to help Minseok up from his spot on the floor.

Kyungsoo is too mortified about everything to move, so he just opens and closes his mouth and then pinches his arm, because this has to be a dream.

“I'm so sorry!” he squawks, moving to help and trying but getting shoved away by Minseok’s hands.

“It’s fine, just, for the rest of the night can you not yell?” Minseok questions him plainly.

“O-of course Minseok-ssi,” he stutters, watching with wide eyes as the elder walks over towards the limo they all rented while shaking his head.

“Jesus, what happened to your nose? And why are you wearing glasses?” Jongdae questions the younger boy.

“You look like Harry Potter with a broken nose,” Chanyeol observes, earning a snort from his “date.”

It’s Sehun. They agreed to go as friends and try and spike all the punch bowls. Chanyeol totally isn’t gay. They said no homo twice.

“That’s Kim Minseok,” Kyungsoo whispers, feeling his eyes water.

“I know! Don’t you just love me? Aren’t I your favorite hyung?” Baekhyun questions enthusiastically, smiling when Kyungsoo kisses him on the cheek before going back to staring at the elder.

Kyungsoo has been crushing on Minseok since forever. He even used to write his name in a little notebook when they were younger. It was only fitting he try and get him a date with the elder, knowing it was the only way he could actually get him to go.

He had to promise they would keep Luhan, his stalker, away all night but it was worth it seeing the look on Kyungsoo’s face.

Well it would be if he didn’t look mortified now.

“I hugged him.”

“That you did.”

“And talked about lube,” Kyungsoo whispers, face going pale.

“I thought it was a nice ice breaker,” he supplies with a shrug.

“I pushed him!” Kyungsoo’s voice cracks pathetically, his wide eyes enlarging comically. Baekhyun wonders if they can get bigger than the frames of his glasses. It would be adorable; therefore he doesn’t tell Kyungsoo this.

“I think you made a good impression,” Jongdae supplies.

“Why is Sehun here?” Kyungsoo questions as he’s finally comes to his senses. He wants to cry because his date is Minseok. But then he wants to cry because his date is Minseok and he knows he’s going to make a fool of himself at some point. He needs to distract himself.

“Me and Chanyeol are going as friends,” Sehun answers, looking rather bored. Kyungsoo thinks he looks handsome, even though the middle parting in his hair doesn’t do him justice.

“Right, friends,” Baekhyun replies plainly, eyeing them both before leading his date towards the limo.

“We’re bros! Right, Sehun?” Chanyeol questions loudly while slinging a lanky arm around Sehun’s shoulders.

“Right.”

Kyungsoo wonders if there’s something going on there that definitely isn’t “no homo.”

“Um, what about you Jongdae?” he questions the elder, realizing he’s all alone. “Didn’t you ask someone?”

“I asked Ms. Zhang and she said no, but my love cannot be hindered! I’ll win her over with my dance moves at prom. She’s chaperoning.”

Jongdae winks before dragging him towards the limo where Minseok is already situated, on his phone looking rather bored.

“Did you need to say bye to your mom?” Chanyeol questions, messing with the mini bar and Kyungsoo’s instantly worried about how this night is going to go.

“She’s at work. It was just me and Seungsoo,” he replies, stealing glances at Minseok because he looks even cuter up close.

“Well then let’s head out!” Baekhyun declares, turning to tell the driver to go.

Kyungsoo pretends he doesn’t get a text message from his brother telling him to make smart decisions.

And to make good use of the lube.

--

The hotel the school rented out for prom is actually quite nice. The ballroom is huge, tables off to both sides while the dance floor is cleared, the DJ set up at a table in the middle. There’s already a ton of people seated when they find an empty table.

“Steak or chicken, such a tough decision,” Sehun drawls out as he stares at his menu.

“It’s really not,” Chanyeol replies offhandedly, shifting the alcohol in his tux a little before choosing his meal.

Kyungsoo, being the gentleman he is decides to ask his date what he’s getting.

“Chicken. Steak is disgusting,” Minseok replies quietly and Kyungsoo’s world crashes down.

Minseok, doesn’t like steak?

“Oh,” he replies, lips turning into a frown as he stares at his own menu.

His crush called his favorite food disgusting. Isn’t that a deal breaker?

Frowning he orders the steak, because he loves it.

As they get their food Kyungsoo tries and fails to make small talk with his date.

“So, is soccer fun?”

“Why would I play it if it wasn’t fun?”

“Did you enjoy your chicken?”

“It was okay.”

Dinner drags on like this and towards the end, Kyungsoo gives up. Because Minseok is a rather boring person, drinking water with his meal and then going into a five minute rant on how they should be served healthier food.

He downright refuses dessert which is cheesecake. Kyungsoo loves cheesecake.

As dinner comes to a close and people start dancing, Kyungsoo is left alone at the table with Minseok who looks bored.

“Do you, um, want to dance?” he questions hesitantly, already knowing he was born with two left feet.

“Not really,” Minseok replies before letting out a sigh.

Kyungsoo follows suit, squinting his eyes as he looks around and sees Sehun and Chanyeol spiking the punch, Jongdae dancing like a lunatic in Ms. Zhang’s line of view and he really doesn’t know where Baekhyun went.

Looking back at Minseok he frowns, years of crushing and Kim Minseok is really boring and kind of unfriendly at times. He keeps complaining that the music is too loud. And that he swears he hears Luhan calling his name at one point.

Kyungsoo feels like he did when he found out Santa wasn’t real. Disappointed and tired.

By nine o'clock Kyungsoo decides his night is not meant to be perfect, so he decides to call it quits.

“You can go hang out with your friends if you want,” he speaks up over the music, giving Minseok a reassuring smile at his shocked expression.

“You’re honestly really boring,” he states bluntly and for the first time all night Minseok cracks a smile.

“Your friends said you really liked me though?” the elder questions him, biting his lip and Kyungsoo manages to still find him cute. But his personality is completely incompatible. They’re too much a like to be honest.

He needs someone to at least attempt to talk to him and ask him to dance even when he’ll say he doesn’t want to.

“I did, but, well I didn’t really know you until today.”

“Understandable.” Minseok replies, standing up and waving to the members of the soccer team. “I really am sorry if I ruined your night. I’m not good at these kinds of things,” Minseok voices and Kyungsoo waves him off.

“I honestly didn’t want to come in the first place.”

Minseok laughs, that same laugh he would have swooned over any other day but instead it just sounds rather plain to him now.

“Still, I feel like I owe you for putting up with me,” Minseok states and before he can process it, he’s leaning down and giving him a kiss.

His first kiss.

His foot doesn’t pop, they don’t zing and there are definitely no fireworks going off.

It definitely sucks, considering he thought his first kiss would be more than a measly peck. But it’s okay he supposes.

“Have fun Kyungsoo!” Minseok chirps before taking off towards his friends, getting tackled by what looks like a drunk Luhan.

Kyungsoo decides to bail while he still can.

--

Sighing Kyungsoo sits on the edge of the huge fountain in the middle of the garden. It’s conveniently close to the ballroom where everyone is having fun, so he doesn’t have to walk far to get away.

Tiredly he takes off his shoes, chucking the shoe lifts his brother made him wear away. He also fishes his glasses out from inside his tux pockets, sighing in relief as his vision becomes clear, his headache easing away somewhat.

His nose still hurts from where he fell on it earlier this morning and as he takes out his phone, turning on the front facing camera he finds its all bruised, his hair is messed up and his glasses are a little crooked.

He looks like a nerd who got beat up.

But at least he got a kiss from his former crush. A horrible kiss, but a kiss nonetheless. That’s probably the highlight of his night.

Stretching his arms above his head he sighs, smiling when he hears a pop in his back.

He also hears his phone fall into the fountain.

Taking a deep breath he slowly opens his eyes and looks down, seeing his iphone sinking to the bottom of the water.

“Why is my life like this?” he wails, reaching down for his phone and watching as the screen turns to black. Kind of like his day.

It’s the darkest day in Do Kyungsoo history. Hurting his nose, hugging Minseok and talking about lube, pushing Minseok, finding out Minseok is incredibly boring and not his type at all, and a horrible kisser.

His life sucks.

“Are you okay?” someone questions him and he nearly jumps from his seat out of surprise.

Looking up he sees Kim Jongin with a cupcake in his hands and icing on the corner of his mouth.

“Today has been the worst day of my life,” he voices, shoulders slumping pathetically. He’d much rather be at home crying over Prince of Tennis.

“Want some icing?” Jongin questions hesitantly, sitting crossed legged across from him and extending the cupcake out towards him.

Normally Kyungsoo doesn’t eat other people’s food, but he’s had a very horrible day and the blue icing looks inviting.

“Thanks,” he mumbles before shoving his finger in his mouth and sucking off the icing.

“You’re welcome,” Jongin replies quietly, looking back down at his cupcake and then going silent.

They share the rest of the icing and then split the chocolate cupcake, eating in silence. When they’re done Kyungsoo decides he’s been quiet for a little too long.

“What are you doing out here anyways?” he questions, licking the icing off of his fingers and missing the blush on Jongin’s face.

“I spilled juice on my date, so she kind of told me to get lost,” Jongin supplies, shrugging his shoulders and looking completely unbothered.

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, I think she only went with me because she broke up with her boyfriend, so it’s okay,” Jongin reassures him, attempting at a smile but it looks a little off.

“My date only agreed to go with me because my friends promised to keep his stalker away from him the entire night,” he offers his own story and Jongin looks amused.

“My date complained about her ex the whole night.”

“My date gave me a horrible kiss.”

“My date was a girl,” Jongin whispers, shuddering afterwards causing Kyungsoo to blanch.

“Wait, you’re gay?” he questions incredulously, because Jongdae was right. Jongdae is never right.

Jongin blinks stupidly as he nods his head, “I thought it was obvious?” he questions, tilting his head when Kyungsoo looks shocked. “I dated Sehun once?” he supplies, watching as Kyungsoo’s eyes go wide.

He looks like a penguin with a bruised beak and owl eyes. In other words: adorable.

Kyungsoo gapes. “You dated Sehun?”

“Yeah, but he really likes Chanyeol, you really didn’t know?” he questions, taking his shoes off and then his socks. He rolls his pants up before dipping his feet in the fountain.

“Sehun likes Chanyeol.” Kyungsoo repeats out loud, almost laughing at the absurdness of it all.

“Yep!” Jongin chirps, splashing his feet like a child. Kyungsoo thinks he looks…kind of…dare he say, cute.

“So if you’re gay, why did you ask a girl to prom?” he questions curiously, following the younger boy in dipping his feet in the fountain.

“Oh, well, my dad doesn’t really approve of it. He thinks it’s a phase or whatever, so I decided to humor him.” Jongin shrugs his shoulders, kicking his feet around in the water so that is splashes his own legs. Not that he minds.

“You should have taken a boy to piss him off,” he supplies. It’s what he would have done had his parents cared that he liked boys. But they really don’t.

“There aren’t very many people I could ask,” Jongin replies, wiggling his toes around. “Sehun likes someone else, Luhan is crazy, and Joonmyun doesn’t like me because I have a library fine, and you, um…”

Jongin mumbles something underneath his breath before kicking his feet some more.

“What about me?” he questions, looking at Jongin curiously.

He honestly doesn’t know the boy all that well. They never shared any classes with one another these past four years. They didn’t really have any mutual friends. He really only knows about Jongin because his mom is the principal.

“You would have said no,” Jongin mumbles. Kyungsoo doesn’t even need to look to know he’s pouting.

Kim Jongin is pouting over the possibility of him turning him down. Suddenly a thought pops into his head, but no. There’s no way.

“That day I ran into you, were you going to ask me to prom?” he questions incredulously.

Jongin nods his head nervously, scratching the back of his head as he stares at Kyungsoo’s feet. He has weirdly cute toes.

“I had a fortune cookie I was supposed to give you with ‘will you go to prom with me’ inside but I ate it myself,” he admits. It was chocolate covered, it’s not like he could have let it go to waste.

“You hugged me in kindergarten because I wouldn’t stop crying for my mom,” he explains, trying to refresh the elder’s memory.

Kyungsoo’s eyes widen in surprise. “I did?”

“And then you kissed me.”

Kyungsoo squawks, “I did?!”

“You don’t remember?” Jongin questions him with a smile, seeming to recall the memory and if Kyungsoo squints and thinks back really, really hard, he remembers that his first kiss was with a cry baby back in kindergarten and that his mom scolded him for it.

“You made a good impression on me I guess,” Jongin comments, shrugging his shoulders and then kicking his feet back and forth some more.

Kyungsoo sits silently as he takes it all in. His first kiss wasn’t with Minseok. It was with Jongin when he was six. His life is a lie.

“So, do you like me?” he questions in a tiny voice, gulping as he messes with his broken phone.

Since when do cute boys like Jongin like him? Since when has he thought Jongin is cute?

“I think you’re pretty great, but um, I don’t know you that well,” Jongin replies while rubbing the back of his neck.

“Do you want to be my prom date?” Kyungsoo blurts, biting his lip when Jongin looks at him with wide eyes.

“But, it’s already almost over?” Jongin questions him, tilting his head cutely. Kyungsoo could get used to staring at Jongin and getting to know him.

“We can still hangout,” Kyungsoo mumbles shyly, “There’s a diner that’s open until midnight we can go to….they have ice cream,” he supplies.

“I love ice cream,” Jongin replies, standing up and holding his hand out which Kyungsoo gladly takes.

As he eats his ice cream and listens to Jongin ramble on and on about some anime, Kyungsoo decides his day wasn’t that bad.

He ends up getting a boyfriend out of it three weeks later.
