Alive again.

Lamorak stumbles out of the woods, barefoot and only half clothed in charred rags; apparently coming back to life will not fully restore burned clothing, and his hair is also burned in certain foul-smelling places. He's very cold, and very disoriented, and has a nasty scar on his throat. Maybe he's still dead. That wouldn't entirely surprise him, ( Read more... )

bloody hell, just when she was starting to relax.

Goewin has just come off Lamorak's hunting shift. She has got four cock pheasant slung over her shoulder, and has not lost any of the arrows that she arrived with last week, though one will need repointing. She aims a whole one carefully at this spectre, just to be on the safe side.

"Sir, can I help?"

"From home. He is a cousin, on my mother's side." (one can assume, as just about everybody is, though the typist can't be bothered to work out exactly how.) "He came to my father's court wholly untrained, demanding to be made a warrior and a Comrade. Caius reamed him with scorn and Peredur broke his arm."

She tells this very deadpan. It's possible she finds it hilarious.

Lamorak actually laughs, though it turns into half a cough. "Lord, that I'd love to see. Hard to imagine my Peredur breaking anyone's arm, much less Kay's..."

"He is one of my father's best warriors, now. Look, there's the house; show me which way to your brother's, and I'll go with you."

"From the main house it's a ways off. That direction," he indicates, once he's oriented.

"All right. Still standing? Do you want to rest at the house?"

She gives a very brief snort of laughter.

"That was your hunt we left behind, not mine. I've just realized. It's you I've been filling in for."

He laughs and winces a bit at the same time. "Lord, Kay must like you, hate me, or both. Third best knight in Camelot, and he replaces me with a lady. No offense meant."

"I am Artos's daughter, Sir Third Best Knight."

and pauses, to let that sink in.

"I don't think I've discredited you much, sir."

"...he has a daughter? Lord, why did no one tell me. Your pardon, my lady. And I'm sure there's a new third best by your time."

"We are not in the habit of lining his Comrades up in order, in my time. They take counsel in a circle. Though of course my father has a right and a left hand to sit by, and among his warriors some shine brighter than others."

oh look now she's in a snit.

"All I meant, my lady, was I am seldom if ever beaten except by Lancelot and Tristan. I meant no offense, and am not offering the manners I should."

"Ah, and you are not yourself, either. Be easy." She gives a very small sigh, a little tired now. "Forgive me, but I know none of your names. None of you have ever been, will ever be in my father's court. I know that Lanslet is he that killed Melou, so he told me. But my father's finest swordsman is called Bedwyr, though my brother has outstripped him this year."

He frowns a bit. "So... you're not the daughter of the king I know?"

"I think I am and am not, both. He is the same king, then and always. But with his life spun out in a different way."

"Hm. Is there a Pellinore, in your version?"

"Pelles. My mother's brother."

the typist is sooo making this up. but basically, the canon sticks to the Mabinogion.

also, the typist has to go to bed, it being 2.00 a.m. here!
