And it was only then that Date looked at him, eyes pained by the outburst, the denial more painful than the last.

"Please."

Well that was more of a surprise that Date can handle.

"I'm not really good with surprises you know." It gets him on his toes and it bothers him quite greatly. Enough to draw wild assumptions in the air.

[mayovice]

...ah. He should have guessed that...

"A-Apologies, sir," Hijikata quickly replied, fumbling a little less now. "I-I didn't mean to scare you or anything..." It was official: next time, he was going to ask Date what he wanted . That way, things would work out well for both of them since the retainer was bad with this whole gift-giving thing as well.

"In the same manner that you didn't mean to spend the entire day with that woman?"

[mayovice]

"I had no intention of that in the first place," the retainer responded, honesty clear in his voice. "She just happened to see me and things just sort of played out the way they did."

Next time, now, he was going to have to try and avoid that. Last thing he wanted was this to happen again.

And at that point Date smiled.

"Thank you then. For your effort in producing this wonderful kimono."

[mayovice]

...that smile really was a lot more nicer than it should be. Hijikata instantly felt himself blushing, and he quickly turned away in an attempt to hide it.

"I-I'm just glad you like it, Masamune-sama," he returned, wholly flustered.

"It'll be one of my prized treasures."

[mayovice]

"Y-You are too kind," Hijikata returned without missing a beat, and his face turned even redder than ever. R-Really, Date didn't need to do that at all.

"Can I try it on?"

[mayovice]

"Ah - o-of course, sir," came the response, and he continued to keep his face low. "Its meant for you after all."

[itsadate]

"Although, I don't think I can wear it now." He flashed a wry yet inviting smile to his company.

"Care to join me for a bath?"

[mayovice]

Hijikata turned around upon hearing that invite, and the only response that Date would get was the blush on his face and the subtle widening of his eyes out of surprise.

"Um, I..." he started, fumbling over his words again. T-This was one hell of an unexpected development.

[itsadate]

"C'mon." Date called once more, sliding the door to his outdoor onsen open before stepping inside.

[mayovice]

"Y-Yessir," Hijikata mumbled back in return after a moment, quietly falling in step behind his lord to follow him towards the onsen. He knew about it of course, but he hadn't really been in there before... looks like that was going to change tonight though.

...not that the retainer minded, of course, but still...

Still... it was an invitation the other should not deny.

Date undressed, the marks of his training still visible on his skin. Bruises and callouses lined his arms and his worn feet. With him, like this, bare and open, he was vulnerable to anyone, any enemy who might come and attack. Still, the man did not worry. Not when his liege was with him.

Under the full moon, Date slipped into the water, sighing just so, relieved of the warm water.
