[After a crackle and second of odd static feedback, the video comes into focus on Sonja, standing sideways and pointing two fingers at her PCD like some jack-hole aiming his gun sideways to be badass. They're apparently projecting a small tongue of flame like a butane lighter. The effect is lost (or heightened) by her long nails and chipping polish ( Read more... )

It pays for everyone to know their place, it's true. The nature of demons is too chaotic for it to be otherwise. But you...you aren't like them, Sonja.

[He doesn't touch her, though he's certainly close enough to--and he certainly has the right, as far as he's concerned.] And there is only so much that torture can teach. I don't want you to think of me as a tyrant, Sonneillon. I was cast out for seeking freedom.

["Close enough" is more than close enough to get her attention and keep it, and keep her looking up (and up and up) at him, and away, then back again as if caught. The intimacy of his tone bothers her- like he knows her, like he could possibly have an idea when he has only just met her.]

I'm actually aware. [She was there.] I know and have been taught my place already. Any reminder would be unnecessary.

[He watches her, silent long minutes while he deciphers the tension in the air. And then he sees all the ways she has been pinned down and used, 'taught her place' not just under a demon's boot but under its body.

'Standard policy', she had said. Lucifer doesn't mask his disgust.]

I am not going to 'remind' you the way they would.

[Her eyes are narrowed in suspicion as the moment draws out tensely. Standard policy, yes, but Sonja was infinitely bl- oh, and there's a word even these brackets won't say - infinitely statistically fortunate to serve under a king who preferred more standard torture methods as his punishment. At least on her: special treatment for the king's right-hand. But the other kings, princes, dukes, even- and Lucifer himself, yes: they were different, and all the same.

Something in her shoulders almost relaxes, by small and over-cautious degrees.]

Then I'm left only with the threat of six Sins. What a relief. [Testing the waters, here. For Lucifer to look baldly disgusted by a concept that has long since scarred every human war zone, dark alley, and frat party paints a picture of a very different Devil than she knows. What else is changed?]

[Of course, she misunderstands his repulsion just like everyone else does. It isn't that he finds the act repugnant. Rather, he believes himself above the need that is inherent in it; it sickens him that some other version of himself stoops to human weakness so often.

Even when he's with Jinx, it's not punishment--it's manipulation, to a degree, but it's also because he is utterly in control of the situation, of her, and most of all of himself. Otherwise it would make him no better than a cat in heat.]

I might invent a new one just for you, if needed. [Mostly teasing.]

[But of course it isn't human weakness, it's their own inherent traits made strong and untainted by goodness or complicating factors then fed back to them. Sonja isn't sure what to make of his repulsion: she'd buy the too-good-for-this excuse for a dollar, would return 'thinks it's just wrong oh my stars and garters' to sender, but is aware that there are other options.

Then there's a joke. What? Oh. Lucifer makes jokes now.]

They tried that. [Cautious cautious.] Wumbo never quite caught on.

[That earns her an eyebrow raise. He's not going to say whether or not he gets the reference. He steps away, obviously expecting her to follow]

There is plenty to keep you busy here. You've noticed?

[She doesn't. Some space between them is appreciated, wanted, and it's only so long before she finally does follow.]

Enough other white meat to slake any hunger. [Running an annoyed hand through her hair.] But you can't get away with murder.

Well, you can if you use the right weapon.

Correction: you can't have fun and get away with it.

But you can.

[He looks over his shoulder, smirks at her.]

Don't give up on your dreams, Sonja.

I have a taste for the old ways. You can't appreciate a death properly without the tangy taste of their arterial blood.

But here, you can taste it a dozen times and still find new ways to murder someone.

Until the villagers attack. I won't lie, I had my own crazy youth with a cornucopia of bad spring break decisions, but at my old age the business end of a pitchfork just isn't for me anymore.

I'm afraid, if you came here to live peacefully among the humans, this is not the world for you.
