I've not seen the earlier films. Would going to this one still be a good idea or should I familiarise myself with the canon first?

You'll probably miss a couple of in jokes - though the hat gags fairly famous anyway - but other than that I'd imagine it'll be fine. The first 3 films don't need to be seen in any particular order.

Given that I'm catching a train at 07:30 on Saturday and I need to pack for a Bank Holiday weekend, I'll meet yous in the pub but then go home and pack instead of the cinema. I shall have to make my own jokes about hats.
