Sometimes I wonder what happens to my Hollins students who have so much originality and so much energy and then they send their stuff off and try to get published and all the editors tell them to do this and do that, fix it this way, fix that that way, and bit by bit, little by little they start to sound like everyone else, and when the book comes out it's the same as what's already out there--sad. Originality is scary and it take a brave editor to risk it and put out something different and unusual. In my speeches to librarians and editors I always tell them to be willing to take risks. I tell myself this too. We have to be willing to risk it all, put it all on the table, lay it out there, or why write at all?
