Here's a really nice, comprehensive, and extremely informative article on current and near-term trends in HDTV technology. The biggest surprise for me is the imminent availability of 2160p sets, which is double the resolution of the 1080p spec. 1) power consumption, and,
2) screen burn-in
The latter turns out to be a real killer, and is probably why LCDs are getting more popular. I can't run a plasma set as a giant computer monitor or video game screen for significant periods of time without burn-in problems. LCD, on the other hand, can hand a static, high-res image forever without burn-in.
