If my mother hadn't given Jerry her wedding set to use, we were both leaning towards black titanium. I even found an engagement ring with the metal for the band. It was so unique and so beautiful. Titanium is such a great metal too, since it's so lightweight. I am not a jewelry person (as far as wearing it goes), so I need something unobtrusive.
I may not WEAR a lot of jewelry but I know far too much about it from when I worked at the jewelry store. I remember when we actually got in our first titanium wedding bands. I played with them all the time to show off how light they were. :)
Very pretty...avivasedaiMarch 29 2004, 06:53:26 UTC
Titanium is a very pretty material, but I'd have to try it on. I'm not sure I'd want such a light ring - I like to know that my jewelry is there, for the most part. }B-)
We looked at titanium wedding bands, but the jeweler told us that they are a bitch if/when you get into an accident involving the finger the ring is on, because they need a special tool to break the titanium (if, say, your finger is swelling up or smashed). He may or may not have been right when he said that...he might have been trying to sell us something more expensive in gold for all I know (we didn't buy our rings there anyway, but I digress). But it did sufficiently spook me out of getting Charles a titanium band, even though there was a very, very pretty one that we both liked.
That's nuts. Titanium can be sawed perfectly well with a steel blade. It can't be repaired afterwards, at least not by normal means, but I've cut it myself, and so has my husband. Most ring cutters have steel sawing blades, and would be fine.
Q: What about cutting off a titanium ring in case of an accident? A: The very first thing when I started making titanium rings is cut them off of my own finger by different methods. Titanium is about as hard as steel, so things that cut steel such as a hacksaw or Dremel tool can be used. Titanium has a reputation of being stronger than steel. It's not necessarily so. It's the high strength to weight ratio that is the reason it is used in aerospace applications. I've had a customer that did have to get one cut off. They were able to remove it without a problem, and she ordered another titanium ring!
In sidenotes, I'm totally down for the Titanium Commitment Samurai. ;)
