My 18th birthday was much the same. I asked for permission to get a lip piercing. I was fiercely denied with an added "and if you do it anyway, you can find another place to live". They gave me $100 and I went to bed and didn't bother getting up. Two pairs of jeans, a hoodie, and socks would cost roughly $100.
We both got shortchanged, kiddo. Not the cash value, but the sentimental kind.
Yeah. I dunno. I guess I sort of have come to expect something from my family, and the money spent on clothes doesn't seem like a real gift. Though, considering how often I get new clothes I don't pay for out of pocket, I suppose I should feel lucky.
Being shortchanged in sentiment sucks. Monetarily, it can be replaced or set right, but emotionally, not so much.
I hope you're doing well... and thanks for the sympathy/empathy -- it makes me feel a lot better to know I'm not the only one.
