I had only recently (within the past several months) heard of DID. I've been following someone on LJ who has multiples for a while but I feel like I still don't understand it. I can appreciate the concept of having several seperate souls sharing a body, because for a long time I felt that way, but I was worried it wasn't natural and that I might be schizophrenic (exposure to schizophrenia as a young child instilled a kind of fear). I made a strong effort to "combine" the different people in me, to recreate I guess a me that was all of them. I don't even know if this is making sense and I think I might be rambling... so... yeah...
DID is really interesting, I wish I had learned of it sooner!
Everyone tends to still know it as Multiple Personality Disorder, and MPD in of itself has such a stigma to it due to lack of coverage as it's evolved and the media/Hollywood that it can be crippling for people to try and identify with it.
A LOT of people compartmentalize themselves. When one dissociates along with that into a separate personality and/or person, that can be and often is DID. One can dissociate without doing that, which is a different coping mechanism than DID is.
Also, many people out there have Multiples without having DID. They compartmentalize heavily to the point of having different personalities or persons (or alters), without the reaction of dissociating to triggers like stress and fear.
Plenty of people integrate. I don't see anything wrong with that. I know I and Le Rouge Sublet (my system) will probably never do that. Same with Ian and Gutter Flowers. None of us have any interest in integration, and are happy the way that we are :]
