I agree - Nancy's a part of John's past that seems to get ignored a lot. He was married to her - it makes sense that he would have kept something that reminded him of her.
I never ever ever comment on fics, because I'm a horrible person that way... But I just have to say, I absolutely love that this doesn't pretend Nancy never existed, doesn't call her the biggest mistake of John's life, and doesn't act like she was some horrible uber-bitch. Because you almost NEVER see her treated like a real human (and wow, she's not even actively in this, lol)!.
Wow, I'm glad you liked it! I think that Nancy maybe was a mistake in John's past, but not in the way people make her out to be - just that they didn't work out, so maybe they shouldn't have been married in the first place. It doesn't make either of them bad people, though, and they loved each other at some point, so it stands to reason that they'd have mementos of each other. John, especially, seems like the kind of guy who'd hold on to things like this from his past.
Oh, I agree it was a mistake, failed marriage and all, I just don't like how it's usually characterized.
I should add, even though I haven't commented, that I absolutely love your writing. Discovered this journal a couple of days ago and have been steadily making my way through it, ignoring RL work.

I love that... there should be more stories that include her.

And I ignore RL work all the time, usually to write things for this. It evens out!
