...and reading LJ again, and maybe even writing. Oh, and I changed my userpic to something that I'm more certain is public domain. And I even downloaded the GIMP just to crop and rescale the original png and not use the dinky thumbnail. Geekness.

So I was reading donaithnen's entry here and was inspired to rant expostulate a bit, and figured I should do ( Read more... )

If others want to be Christian or whatever, that's their business. I only get uppity when it's shoved in my face.

And I will laugh at the specific ones who seem to think the only reason other people aren't Christian is that we haven't heard of Christianity. Seriously, int he US, I'll meet Christians who think I haven't heard of Jesus or obviously I'd be Christian. Most Christians I know are fine and I have no problems with them.

Well, if they're Christian of any sect, ask them what they are, and then say "Oh, a Baptist/Catholic/Mormon/whatever seems least similar". I think they'll get the point, and it's a fairly gentle way to point out that there is a difference. (Of course, if you're getting this from Wiccans, then those individuals seem to be a bit overinclusive. I do have to admit I *don't* know what differentiates Wicca from the other things lumped under "pagan", but I do know there is one.)

I agree with most of this, and glad to see you are able to question your faith. Does your dad know you're agnostic? Would he care?

Right! Like knowing things based on faith, rather than on evidence. Or the whole "Those who didn't happen to choose or be born into the right religion are going to hell" bit.

My problem is with the majority of the practitioners. Because of a mainstream movement, not just a couple of radicals, Democratic vice-presidential candidate?

Which brings up the fact that I have no more problem with Christianity than any other religion. Just that because most Americans are Christians, the influence comes from them. If I lived in the Islamic world (not counting Turkey which has a secular government), I would object just as strongly to the majority view of Muslims.
