Under the cut we have a number of announcements to make, including this week's Full Moon event. Please read everything in its entirety, and we will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. If you have any other concerns or suggestions for any of the following announcements, you are also welcome to comment here.
❖ application changes: two samples
We proposed and ran a poll on a
previous mod announcement about a month ago on changing the application to require two samples. The reasoning for this is the community uses both first and third person, and it would allow applicants to better portray their character's voice. This is to help reduce the number of Wavers we normally give due to lacking samples.
As stated in the other post, this is how they would work:
- Must provide both a first person and third person sample.
- The first person sample must be a minimum of 8 (?) complete sentences. Only the dialogue would count, though action tags are also allowed. Leniency will be given to silent-type characters.
- We will give prompts for the first person sample, and the prompt can also be used for the third person sample. Note: The prompts will be optional and just allow applicants to use them for ideas on samples if they're stuck.
- The prompt will be dialogue focused, so it would be more like an interview asking questions. They would designed to purposefully seek out answers that would reflect the character's personality and how they would interact with another person. The questions could also be assumed to be either in a written or dialogue format. This would allow flexibility for the silent type characters.
- For interview type questions, there will be a long list of questions that the player can choose from. We will try to give as many different types of questions as possible so that the applicant can choose a set that best fits their character or that they can best give a response to.
- The questions will be available on the copy/pasta form as well as clear directions on how to use them.
- The main purpose is to allow applicants more opportunity to show us how they would play their character and to allow for more creativity.
- Edit: In terms of judging, even though we would require the two samples, we would be lenient. For example, if one sample is perfectly acceptable, but the other one is so-so, we would still accept the samples. We would not waver an application if only one sample is so-so unless one of the samples did not meet the requirements, very poor, or was difficult to understand on a technical level. If both samples are so-so, then they would at least get a Waver on that.
The majority of the playerbase was fine with the change, so we will now be officially implementing it into the August Cycle.
NOTE! For this upcoming cycle only, the two sample change will not be mandatory. This is because we are currently in a transition period and it would be unfair for any who have already started working on their applications with the original format. Giving one sample will still be allowed. But starting September, the two samples will be required.
We are always open for more prompt/question suggestions, so if you ever think of one, feel free to contact one of us mods, comment here, or comment on the
Questions/Suggestions post.
❖ death punishment changes
As stated in the same post about the application sample changes (
here), we have been working on changing the death punishments to be harsher so as to make them harsher and have more IC consequences.
We received a lot of suggestions, and we thank everyone who gave their invaluable input about this! We are still open to any suggestions, but for now this is what the death punishments will look like from now on:
Note: As of July 19, 2010, the following death punishments are in effect. Characters who died once before this date will be restarted at a count of 0. Those who died more than once will be restarted at a count of 1.
Immediately after dying, characters will still be playable. However, depending on the number of times they died, they will suffer one of the following death punishments. Note: all super powers will be disabled for all of the death punishments. After the designated time period, characters will "respawn" at a random location of the player's choice. The only place they cannot respawn is out in the desert or inside the floating castle. They can, however, respawn anywhere on the outside grounds of the floating castle.
- First Death - Those who die for the very first time will have the following options available to them:
- Going ghost. Your character can be a semi-ghost and will be restricted to the area of death. By "semi-ghost" we mean that the character will have moments of complete intangibility, and at other times will be partially solid. They will have a "jello-like" substance to them, so if they are ever in the partial-intangible stage, they will be able to touch things and other characters will also be able to feel them. During complete intangible mode, they will be able to behave like normal ghosts and pass through walls, hover a little, etc. They will be unable to control when they change from one phase to the next.
- Minor loss. Your character can lose something of minor importance to them. It can be an old memory, their favorite pair of boots, a well-loved jacket, or a stuffed animal. It does not have to be anything devastating or traumatic. Remember, this is minor.
- Combo Set 1-A. A combination of being ghost and the minor loss.
- Combo Set 1-B. A combination of either being ghost or the minor loss, plus sensory loss of your choice for a week. This means your character could lose any of their five basic senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, or touch.
Note: There is no memory loss of any kind for the first death. The effects should also only last for at most a week, and after there is only a very short recovery period after the character "respawns" back to life.
- Second Death - The consequences are naturally a little more severe. With the second death, your character will be a ghost. Like the first death, the character will not be a complete ghost, but will find that they remain in the "true ghost" phase longer. The following additional options will also occur:
- Temporary minor memory loss. Characters will forget just a few details about them and will be in a state something akin to distant amnesia. They could forget their name, names of friends and loved ones, their home, where they are, what they were doing.
- Temporary partial paralysis. Characters will lose an ability of the player's choice. This could be anything from speaking to the use of the right arm. The limb could be still be there, but it will be as if it were paralyzed.
- Other Loss. Characters will lose something important to them of a greater magnitude than the minor loss in the first death. This could be anything from a body part, to an eye, to a treasured memory. Any questions about this may be directed to the mods. This loss will be permanent unless bargained away with the Death Keeper.
- Combo Set 2-A. Character can have all three punishment effects in place, or any combination of two of the above-listed punishments.
- Combo Set 2-B. Combine one effect from the first death with any of the above second death effects. This includes the option to have a loss of sensory skill.
The effects last for at most a week. Characters will feel slightly weakened for a short period of time afterward, but will be back to normal.
- Third Death - If your character dies for a third time, they will have the following traits:
- Complete ghost. Characters will be in a complete ghost phase and will have no moments of tangibility.
- Severe memory loss. Characters will forget major events that occurred to them, as well as important memories such as friends and loved ones. Unlike the minor memory loss, this is not limited to just the name, but to the whole person as well. The character may even forget who they are.
- Apathy. Despite the severe memory loss, characters will feel distant and cold about everything around them. It will be as if they are suffering a severe case of amnesia. It is possible for them to remember things from time to time, but it will feel very distant and detached.
- Passivity. Characters will not interact with their surroundings much, if at all. They will be very passive about things.
Unlike the other two death punishments, these effects do not wear off naturally. In order to be brought back to life, characters will have to barter with the Death Keeper. The item could be a dream, an item, or some kind of service the character will have to perform upon respawning. Should a third death occur, contact one of the mods.
- Fourth death or more. Should your character die more than three times, they will have to face dire consequence. They will suffer all of the death effects and will also have to face the Death Keeper. However, instead of just bartering, they will have to give all their dreams to him and will be transformed into a Noctaere creature for a week. Upon respawning, they will be severely weakened, perhaps even crippled for a period of time.
- Event death forgiveness. Some deaths are unplanned and are "accidental", and this is even more so when there is an event that could cause numerous amount of death. That is, some plot-events may bring upon disasters or monsters upon characters and that would make death almost unavoidable for some characters. In that case, the respective punishment is less severe. So for instance, if the character had already died twice, and a death by monster occurs, they would only have to go through the second death punishment instead of the third, and even then the effects are still lessened a bit. This is also true for any characters who die under a mass murder plot.
- Murder awareness. There are a number of characters who do kill and murder as part of their personality/character type, and after a certain point they, too, will be punished. After their third kill, the character will always feel weakened and dazed at sporadic times. They may also feel less satisfied than usual. However, that's the only effect that we will place as we also don't want to restrict such characters to the point that they could become OOC. Note: This would only affect characters who kill just for the sake of killing. Characters who kill either because they have to in order to live or under the influence are excused.
New characters and players should also take note of the player-run Somarium Justice System, which apprehends Somni City criminals and arranges punishments on a player to player permissions basis.
As said before, we are still open for suggestions, and some may be curious about the "Death Keeper". This is an NPC character who does have somewhat of a plot role, so we hope to introduce the character ICly into the game soon.
❖ MOON CYCLE 28 ❂ 07/20/10 - 07/27/10
Phase: Full Moon. The moon will seem larger than usual, and there is no mistaking the golden shine it seems to have. It almost seems to glow.
Weather: Fair weather with moderately warm temperatures and ample cool breezes. There is no sign of rain or any foul weather to be had.
Effects: Dream Power. Your characters will feel one of the two effects: either super charged up with power, or super drained of power/energy.
Notes: Remember those crystals that appeared before your character
two cycles ago? They will now come into major play this week.
- Super dream powers go! The crystals are the source of your character's powers and are charged via dreams. The more powerful the dream, the more power they get. Every time your character dreams or is involved in one, they will suddenly get a boost of energy/power. Characters are granted one super power to utilize for this whole week. You can choose anything from this list. All we ask if for players to not go overboard and destroy the world.
- Power drain. Should a character be too powerful at any time, their power/energy will be drained, and they will suddenly feel weaker than usual. This is a temporary state, but they will have to use their dreams to recharge themselves. Over dreaming can also cause the power drain to happen.
- Don't dream spam. While we say that dreams power everything, this does not mean you have to make a dream post for it to be "official". Dreams can be assumed. Also, please be realistic. Even if a character took several naps in a day, they will not suddenly have the powers of a god. In fact, this could be detrimental and they will instead get drained of energy.
- No godmodding. No matter how powerful your character is or whatever type of manipulative ability they have, always ask player permission before doing anything. And remember there are some restrictions still in place.
- Death punishments are in effect. The above listed death punishments are in effect as of today, so keep that in mind if you plan on offing your character.
- Event is optional. As usual, this event is optional. You could choose to have your character completely unaffected, but the crystals will still be charged by the dreams.
- New characters have crystals. New characters who came in after the last two cycles will find their crystal in the form of their most important thing upon waking at any point of the week. For more information on how the crystals work/look like, just refer to this post.
If you have any questions or concerns about the event or anything else, feel free to post here.
The tag for this event will be !moon: cycle 28.
