[Magnus Bane is a warlock of many talents, excellent eyesight not the least of these. And it is very rare that a cute boy (or girl) goes unnoticed. It helped that Kyou's hair was bright and obvious, so while he may have given hiding his best effort, once pinged he could not hope to escape Magnus.
