As luck would have it, Noel was trying to investigate the sudden changes in the city and its social structure, but a familiar voice and the sound of meowing caught her attention as she passed by an alleyway. Skidding to a halt, she turns to find the source, and while what she saw was the only logical result... it was still a surprising sight to see.

Hnnng, how adorable. Not just the cute, fluffy kittens, one of the many things she was fond of, but how content Elliot was with playing with them, too. She couldn't help but smile at the scene, and approaches them.

"Aww... They're so cute! It's a shame they were left here," Noel remarked, bending forward to get a better look at them. "Are you going to keep them, Elliot?"

He was pretty content. So content that he didn't even realize that he'd been spotted, and that he was being approached. The second she spoke up, he jolted to try to stand up. The kitten on his lap scrambled away with a loud yelp. Elliot mentally winced at the sound, and the way all three of them darted in the opposite direction, away from the two of them, because of his sudden movement.

"O-Of course not! They were disturbing the peace with their meowing! I was just trying to shut them up!"

...He glanced over the way they had run, relieved to find the kittens hadn't gone too far. They had stopped, but they were keeping their distance, staring and gauging the situation warily, especially after Elliot's reaction.

And Noel nearly jumps with surprise when he bolts up. Really, Elliot? You could've handled this a lot better. As a lover of cute animals, Noel is disappoint.

"You know I know you better than that," she quickly calms down, and gestures towards the kittens. "Look, you scared them. Go say you're sorry."

She's dead serious about that request. :|

Who did she think she was, claiming to know what he would usually do?! ... She was someone who had been around him for half a year now and actually was starting to get to know him. He just didn't want to admit it out loud.

"What?! Why? They're cats! They wouldn't understand it, even if I did! It's their fault for being so loud!"

[Being rather fond of cats himself, this scene definitely pings Kasuka, who slowly approaches.]

... Were they abandoned?

[As soon as he heard someone approaching, his gaze snapped back to see, making the kittens jump slightly, but... It wasn't like this person was someone he knew. Why should he have to act up to him?]

I'm not sure. [He at least tries gently the one on his lap off of him to look a little more dignified, but the little kitty didn't seem to want to leave that easily.] They might be waiting here for someone.

Maybe... but if there isn't anyone, then they'll be left here by themselves.

[Kasuka's also noticed the lack of a mother, after all.]

GAH! I suck! I'm so sorry for the delay! snapekillsedgar April 15 2011, 00:03:11 UTC
... Either that, or they could have wandered away from where they were supposed to be.

[What to do...]

[Mostly Break is amused.

He has recovered quickly, and the voice is familiar enough that he can place it in an instant. The cats' noises are more than distinctive enough.

...And yet, he cannot quite forget how Elliot helped him before.

And so his tone is, perhaps, less taunting than it would be at any other time. He speaks up from behind, having walked there quite silently; simply because he is now blind does not mean he is incompetent.]

Ah, there do seem to be cats everywhere, these days. I wonder what one is to do with all of them!

[Break should know by now that when you sneak up on the poor kid, he doesn't appreciate it much. He startled, nearly standing up, but stopping as the kittens bolted from him several skitters back. He stayed kneeling, his surprise giving way to almost automatic annoyance at the sight of Break. Part of him was glad that the other man was faring well after the way he had found him a few weeks ago, but now he was back to acting insufferable and sneaking up on people.]

There are pounds in this place, aren't there? They should be doing their job and keeping them out of the streets!

There are, and I am sure that they shall take in and perhaps even take out these kittens were they alerted to the fact that they are here~

[A pause; it would look as though he is watching the kittens, for he is careful to keep up his facade of sight. A tilted head and a thoughtful pause and--]

I rather imagine my Lady would not disapprove of a kitten in the manor.

[...Take out?! Elliot couldn't even suppress his momentarily horrified expression at even the mere thought of that. He hadn't really thought about that before he spoke. There was no way he would let them be killed, but... What Break was implying was something he couldn't do. A Nightray with a cat? He would be embarrassing his family... But living under the same roof as one wouldn't be so bad.]

Why don't you get one for her then. [He's trying to sound like he's annoyed by this idea, but Break's pretty perceptive.]

Oh. OH. Well, then.

Over the sound of the kittens mewing, Elliot might hear another sound - one that he doesn't get to hear too often and probably hasn't heard in a good long while. The quiet sound of his sister giggling from a spot where she's now standing a few feet away from him. Why is her little brother such an adorable idiot...

Elliot froze mid-pet, his head turning very slowly at the sound. He stared, initially feeling a sense of dread at being caught like this, by his sister of all people. It didn't take long for his gaze to become more about what he was seeing her do... She was laughing. She wasn't angry, or annoyed. She was genuinely laughing. The last time he had seen her so happy was months ago, and even then, it only lasted a few seconds.

The kitten on his lap looked up and pawed at him, mewling in disapproval at the lack of petting. Elliot didn't continue yet. He kept watching Vanessa. Usually he would get angry at her for laughing at him, but this time, he just waited, not having the heart to try to stop her.

Good reaction, Elliot. One hand still pressed to her mouth demurely, she walked out from where she'd been spying and strolled towards him slowly. This sight really was too much. Plus, it would make Gilbert cry if he were here, and that fact pleased her too.

But mostly, she was just glad to let her guard down after it had been up so firmly the last few weeks and simply enjoy this moment, as ridiculous as it was.

"Well, I was simply out for a walk, and what do I happen to see?" she said through her laughter. "The nobleman Elliot Nightray, heir of the Nightray house on his hands and knees playing with kittens!"

The hand then dropped to reach down and pat his head, as she had done when he was still a small child, happy laughter ringing freely.

"If only father were here to see this!"

Well, so much for remaining calm. Seeing her happy was one thing. Letting her treat him like a child was something else entirely. After only a few seconds of her hand being on his head, he flailed an arm out to stop her, overbalancing a little and falling over on his behind instead of on his knees. The poor kittens jumped away several feet, huddling back together and staring at the two with wide, fearful eyes.

"I wasn't playing with them! You could hear them out in the street! I just---" ... What exactly could he have been doing, then? It was undeniable that he had been sitting there, caught red handed, petting them. There was no way Vanessa couldn't have seen that. "--- just............... Shut up!"

When Elliot was too flustered to even come up with a good argument on the fly, you know that you seriously hit a soft spot.
