It had been a rough week for Max as well. He was upset and worried and angry - was all of these things even before Harry Potter told him that his sister was dead. And for a brief second, he was amused, cause he really thought the older boy had been joking ( ... )

"It's me," she tried softly, raising her voice just enough to be heard through the door. Isabelle didn't want anyone else hearing the waver in her voice, nor the soft sniffle of tears held back. "Isabelle." As if it needed clarification.

She opened her mouth to say something else, but settled for waiting for a response. He would give one, she knew that much. Max had always been the type to not leave people hanging; she wouldn't say he was easy to read, but he was a kid. He was filled with emotions, however basic they sometimes seemed, and they usually drove his every action. Izzy had to admit, she loved him for it, among other things.

Max's fingers clenched around the pages of his manga. He stared at the back of the door, shocked and disbelieving.

Then the little book hit the floor as he flew from the bed, his glasses about to fall off, his little hands pushing at the locked door like that might open it from the inside.

"Really?!" he asked, tears already rolling down his pale face. Max didn't stop to rub at them, but looked helplessly at the door. She was alive! Harry was wrong.

She covered her mouth with one hand at the sound of his book - probably some new manga she hadn't taken him to buy - hitting the ground. It was another moment before she had composed herself enough to laugh a soft, nervous reply. "No, I'm just pulling your leg."

There was a part of her that wanted to just get the door out of the way as soon as possible, but it was obvious to Izzy that they both needed a moment. Just the sound of his voice was bringing hot tears to her eyes, and she was almost willing to let them fall for him. "You want to chat through a door all night, or are you going to let me in?"
