At the end of the day, Raiden had found not a single trace of Solid Snake. With nothing more to do and nowhere else to go - he'd been alone for most of the day, anyway, ruminating over this disturbing problem - he took Gray up on his invitation to join him and Big Boss at Outer Heaven.

However, he didn't feel right knocking on the door of a military base, but nor did he feel all right with simply entering without warning. Instead, he chose to take a seat beside the base's front doorstep, back to the wall, head bowed. He was sure Gray would be out on patrol soon enough. In the meantime, he'd shut his eyes and think. There had to be something he missed...

"Nothing to track..." Musing to himself, the soldier found himself at an unusual loss for words. Raiden wasn't the kind of man to accept any sympathy, but he was obviously broken up about this.

"Frank and I will keep a look out for him. Until we find him, you are free to stay here. And if there is anything else you need, don't hesitate to ask."

Frank swallowed. He glanced over to Big Boss and then over to Raiden. This was sounding familiar.

There had been nothing to track when Big Boss left either.

"No," Raiden said simply. "I came to ask when you had last seen him. I don't want to get in the way." He rose back to his feet, crossing over to the nearest window and glancing outside. His voice lowered considerably as he continued to speak. "It's my mission, my responsibility to protect Pliskin, not yours."

"We're comrades now, Raiden. We have the same goals."

Raiden said nothing. He merely continued his silent vigil, staring out the window to the snowy ground below.

"Raiden," Frank said, stepping over towards the cyborg. He glanced back at Big Boss, hesitating a moment before continuing.

"...I'd like a word."

Raiden glanced back to Frank, uncertainty and apprehension written on his face. He hesitated.

Slowly, he gave a crisp nod and turned to face his young ninja acquaintance, waiting for the boy to lead the way.

Frank looked over to Big Boss.

"We'll be back shortly."

His eyes returned to Raiden and he gave the cyborg a nod, motioning for him to follow, heading out of the sitting room and leading the cyborg out into the hall and up a small staircase, taking him up to the roof.

Raiden followed closely behind the boy. He was aware that they were heading up to the roof - one of his favorite spots to sit and think alone. What did Frank want?

When they reached the roof, Raiden stepped carefully over to the far edge and watched the city below.

Frank stood near Raiden, looking out across the sector with his comrade.

"Big Boss never went on a mission."

Raiden cast a sidelong glance to Frank. What the hell could that mean?

"Huh. ... Then what happened to him?"

Frank felt Raiden's gaze on him but he kept his focus straight ahead.

"...He disappeared. There was nothing to track."

To that, Raiden had nothing to say. Instead, he shifted his intense gaze back to the industrial sector below.

The silence stretched on. Quietly, Raiden asked,

"Then how did you manage to find him, Gray?"

"He returned on his own," Frank said, closing his eyes as he recalled the morning Big Boss returned to Outer Heaven. It had been the day before the gathering at Outer Heaven; Frank still hadn't pieced together what had happened.

"He returned here, believing he had only been away for a few short hours. He left no trail, I could not contact him over his radio. He disappeared."

"I can't afford to wait so long," Raiden insisted urgently. His firm tone was back with a vengeance. "Unless I know he is protected, I've already failed my mission... and my debt to him, as I promised."
