As the last sliver of moon eclipsed into darkness, a strange wind blew through the sleeping city of Somarium. Not a sound was made as a black substance bubbled around the statue standing out in the desert above the sink hole. It moved, almost like a head looking left and right before sinking back down. There was a moment before the outer edges of the sink hole seemed to bleed out and away, like black oil trickling across the sand. There was a small spark upon reaching the barrier, but it just split: part of it went up along the barrier while the rest seeped past it and into Somarium.
The dark shadows crept through the streets as the long, dark shadow tendrils climbed up and around everything, leaving nothing but darkness in its wake. Everything it touched was engulfed in darkness, extinguishing all light. Anyone still awake, whether walking outside on the streets or reading in a study, immediately fell asleep as the shadows passed over them.
After several minutes, the black shadowy tide had completely covered Somarium. It stayed like that for a minute longer before it began to recede back toward the sink hole.
Like a veil slowly lifting, parts of Somarium could once again be seen. However, the shadows continued to recede back into its source, and soon it had disappeared back into the sink hole. But it had left something in its wake.
What had once been a prosperous, flourishing city became old, rusty, decrepit. It was if hundreds of abandoned years had passed. Older buildings were either crumbling or collapsed, and most of the streets were ruined. Vehicles were rusted over. Life seemed to have disappeared completely. Only rogue strays were found, and the lake had dead fish floating near the edges of the water. One could only guess what was left up in the mountains.
This was the scene that would greet the characters upon waking in the morning. But that was not the only surprise awaiting them.
For when they wake up, the will find themselves dressed not in what they had gone to bed with or was wearing before suddenly falling asleep, but something completely different. What was more, they will fear a sharp pain in their heads before it clears. They may not realize it immediately, but why will have been gifted with strange powers, powers that seem to have come from whatever garb they woke up in.
The new moon cycle had begun.
[ooc: And here we are, the signal post for the very beginning of the New Moon event. NOTE: this is NOT the start for either the Somarium or Noctaerium based events. This post only signals the setting change and the fact that the characters are now in costume. For further details, refer to the
