*Meanwhile Alice was already outside, holding a bag of novels she picked out. She's worrying a little because she just realized that he wouldn't be able to answer the door if he hurt his back. And she couldn't just barge in. H-hopefully, he can at least call out?

And knocking on the door.*

[ Of course, Carl is a resourceful child, so instead of answering the door, a little gold automaton greets you by unlocking it. It's actually kind of fancy, but he has to seriously concentrate to get it to move for him. Being injured sucks. ]

I should have thought about that a bit more... I'm sorry. It didn't occur to me until now...

[ It is a tiny little puppet, but it has dexterity, he thinks. And a little charm. It even waves at you. Sup? ]

*When a little doll greeted her at the door, she was surprised. Of course, she could have flipped out as well, but Carl's apology from the inside of the house stopped her from doing so. She waved at the automaton with bit of an unease but with mixture of awe.*

It's fine. Your little friend solved the problem in the end.

*She walked in slowly and saw the boy on the couch.*

You're in worse condition than I thought ...

[ There's a brief smile, and he bites back a wince. It's true, it does hurts. But he doesn't complain. No, real men don't complain about their injuries. Not in front of a kind girl like her, no sir. ]

Oh no, I'm okay. Just a few bruises... it's nothing I can't handle. I've had much worse. Thank you for the concern, though I'm sure it'll heal up soon. I hope I didn't surprise you too much...?

[ And here's the fun part, the automaton disappears into the recesses of his hat. Kind of like magic (except not really, it just folds up). He can't help but be a little curious as to what kinds of books Alice brought. ]
