[Oh hey, does your mother know you're out?

[Something nobody had ever told Ken about being in the police before he joined it - before it was too late to wonder if maybe he should have joined the army instead - was that when nothing was happening? Which, when you were on night shifts and on patrol and it wasn't chucking-out time, added up to a surprising amount of the time? Being a police officer was actually extremely damn boring. Well, at least it wasn't raining? That was something.

[The one positive, he supposed, was that when nothing was happening and had been for quite a while a guy was so relieved to stumble across something that was actually going on that he'd go and investigate just to say he had something to do. And really, a small, blonde eight year old girl where a small, blonde eight year old girl really probably shouldn't have been? Yeah, she was out of place simply by definition. Besides, boring as it was right now Somarium wasn't always the best place to be at night, if you were small, blonde and eight ( ... )

[Wait, you mean she doesn't know what a cop in uniform looks like? Wow, there's sheltered and then there's sheltered--]

Oh, I work for the police... stuff like this'd be kinda what we're here for, miss. It's not just catching bad guys, it's making sure everyone else is okay too, and right now I guess that means seeing you get home safe. It's okay, I'm not gonna tell anybody you were out. Unless you want me to.

[She knows what Javert looks like, as far as she's concerned, that is enough to know in her opinion. Besides, she has no real reason to interact with an officer otherwise.]

That's very kind of you sir. Thank you.

Sure, if you're ready. How'd you wanna get back, anyway? I mean is there ar back entrance you're going for or something?

[Yeah, well aware of what it's gonna look like if she's bought back by a policeman. It might not, strictly speaking, be how he's supposed to handle this, but... well, why cause this kid that kind of trouble over a one-off?]

Oh... I just left through the front door, couldn't I just enter back in the same way?

[Yeah... definitely not something this girl makes a habit of.]

Uh... well, I guess you could but won't your family see you? I don't wanna drop you in trouble or anything, I just wanna know you're back safe.

Well, if that's the way you're good with going, that's fine by me. I just don't wanna cause trouble for you with your dad, you know?

May not know what? You snuck out, right?

[Ken laughs a little, looking up at the sky for a moment.]

I used to do that when I was a kid. It's... well, it's really not something you should do a lot because I bet your dad would worry a lot, but most everyone does it at least once. So long as you don't make a habit of it I'm not gonna say anything.

Father has a tendency to know everything.

And why ever would I make a habit of sneaking out?

Dads do! I think that's just a dad thing, they always seem to know way too much.

And you never know, some kids just do that. [He laughs again.] I sure did.
