A hitch in the line. An aggravation committed by a girl too young to conduct a proper investigation prior to formal indictment. The thought of such a setback in his day pursed his mouth in irritation.

Her accusation did not personally insult him so much as he felt it was an offense against his livelihood. It was what he would call, with no mincing of words, a disgrace to police work by a teenaged baboushka (as the Russians would call an annoying spinster). After he worked to build his reputation in Somarium, it was just the sort of action that could discredit the entire police service if they did not act cautiously as a collective.

It was in this unpleasant mood that Inspector Javert awaited Franziska von Karma's arrival outside the large double doors of the Somarium Courthouse. He was the unmistakably dark, lofty shape just to the left of the frame, a leather-bound journal grasped firmly in hand. In the flesh, his very soul oozed the authority and utter belief in fairness according to the law with a cold menace that rivaled Manfred ( ... )

Finally reaching the suspected criminal at the place he had specified, Franziska smugly tilted her chin up to smile coldly upon her prey. It was her usual attitude before court, that arrogant grin that only a von Karma could produce.

"Good afternoon, Inspector Javert." She had barely even spoken to the man since her arrival and already the girl could sense that this battle would be difficult, even for someone of her talent and experience. Yes, she would come out victorious in the end, that was a given, but it would be a long waged war. Inspector Javert seemed like both an intelligent and highly respected man. Just the type to give her a sufficient challenge. It was obvious he was a seasoned veteran in this profession. He would know all the tricks to hiding evidence or shutting up witnesses, tactics she had employed many times throughout her career.

He may have been able to escape with the kidnapping a week beforehand, but now that the Prodigy was here, he would have met his match.

Self-proclaimed prodigy or not, Javert was not impressed, his expression making no mistake of that. She was one of the rare individuals that could stand to have a bit more modesty. How unbecoming of a woman of her clear wealth and stature! He did not tuck his journal back in his massive overcoat pocket until he reached the end of his current page ( ... )

That gaze was even more piercing and chilling than in person than could ever be portrayed over the small Dreamberry screen. Only allowing herself to frown in displeasure, Franziska's hand reached for her whip, gripping the handle tightly but not uncoiling it from her waist. With a surge of confidence coursing through her small frame, Franziska stepped forward after him through the doors and into the Courthouse.

She had no idea just what or who she would find inside.

"I assume you have something of importance to show me, Inspector Javert? I do not like to waste time on trivial matters."
