As he headed back home, Alec wondered not for the first time what had possessed him to trudge to the library on such a cold day. First, he hated snow. Second, Magnus could just as easily snap a book into the room for him to read. Third, he hated snow. He shivered and tugged his jacket tight around the collar, hoping to fend off the cold.
In the end, he had gotten as far as the outskirts of the village before the cold had become nearly unbearable, forcing him to turn around (and reminding him that the idea had been pointless and idiotic to begin with).
Lost in thought, trying to keep his head down, Alec didn't notice the person he passed by as he walked through the snow. But something tugged at the back of his mind, and the hairs prickled on the back of his neck, almost forcing him to look back and see who he'd passed.
He caught the light of the blade first, then the familiar build, then the mess of blonde hair. His mouth dropped open in disbelief, and he could only stare for a moment before he finally found his voice.
Jace had heard someone coming, and therefore had had a moment to fully examine the other as he passed him by. So when Alec glanced back and finally recognized him, Jace was already waiting with a cocky half-smirk on his lips. So he wasn't alone here. Maybe all of the Institute residents had been summoned to this place somehow. It didn't really explain how it had happened, or who was behind it, but for whatever reason, knowing Alec was here served to ease up some of his initial tension. Of course, it still probably meant they were both in danger.
Now was definitely not the time to be making jokes, which meant that Jace simply couldn't resist.
"Alec." His greeting was annoyingly casual. "You shouldn't have. How did you know that I've always wanted to be abducted mid-nap and dumped in the middle of a winter wonderland?"
Despite the cold, Alec suddenly felt warm. It had been months since he had seen any of his family, and despite the happiness he felt whenever he was with Magnus, he couldn't help but miss them. And now Jace was standing right in front of him. Surely this was a dream?
It took him a moment to realize that Jace had replied to his "greeting" and that silence had fallen between them as Alec continued to openly stare in disbelief.
"Oh, uh, you did?" He shook his head; he'd never been great with witty retorts like Jace. "Nevermind. What the hell are you doing here?"
Jace really should have known better than to tease Alec like that, when he knew fully well that his brother was prone to taking him completely seriously, but that only encouraged him further. Both of his eyebrows shot up.
"Oh, I just felt like taking a stroll. Seeing the sights." When Alec's facial expression didn't change, he practically rolled his eyes, and then added: "I have no idea, Alec. What the hell is 'here'? And what are you doing in it? You hate snow." He scanned the horizon again as if Maryse was going to pop out from behind a tree. "Is your sister here? Or anyone else from the Institute?"
[On her way back from the library, books clutched tightly to her chest, the sight of some guy that looks like Yoh a bit twirling a blade causes her to stop and stare for a second before she realizes that it's in fact someone completely different. So, she'll just be masking her discomfort at staring at a stranger with a bit of arrogance here.]
You should put that away before you hurt yourself.
[Yeah, well, Jace isn't exactly making a good first impression. We're really tired of these blonde haired arrogant gits who like making threats. Like really really tired.]

It's not me you should be worried about.
[His tone makes it clear that the drawled words aren't a threat to her, but they are threatening in manner, nonetheless]

Then who exactly should I be worried about?
[She's clearly not amused.]

Whoever gets in my way.
[It somehow manages to sound matter of fact, rather than boastful.]
