By the time she returned, Elliot was awake and sitting up, looking like he had just been staring off into space until his sister walked in and his attention snapped straight to her. He'd woken up around mid-day to find that he wasn't anywhere near as sore as he had felt before, but he also quickly realized that his sister left the tent as well. In fact, no one else was there. He hadn't seen Leo the whole day either. There weren't even any books around for him to distract himself with, so that left him with absolutely nothing to do except sit alone with his thoughts. At least what he remembered when he was awake was nothing in comparison to what he experienced when he was asleep ( ... )

On her way back, she'd done her best to work up the courage to speak to him and admit that she knew his secrets now that he'd tried to keep for so long. There was no way that he could tell her that she'd seen things now! Not when it had happened again, this time with far more detail! But as soon as she heard his voice and say him sitting there before her, still too weak to get out of bed (or what passed as a bed until the house was finished) she froze in place, her hands shaking visibly. As strong as she could pretend to be, she was too weak to do this.

"They're - nothing. It's just--it's too drab in here! There's no color or fragrance or..."

She swallowed back the rest of her words painfully and then moved towards her sleeping bag, flowers still clenched in her shaky hands as she sat down on her knees.

"How...how are you feeling?"

He wanted to believe her, he really did... But he knew so much better then that. His sister never stumbled over her words like that when she wasn't hiding something.

"I've told you before, stop worrying about it. I'm fine."

A frown settled on his face as he looked down to the flowers in her arms again. Unfortunately for her, this wasn't something she could lie about to him. Maybe someone else would have believed they were just for decoration, but she had taught Elliot all about flowers.

"You know what I really meant, Vanessa. You're the one who taught me what marigolds stand for."

She wasn't sure why those words made her so mad, but suddenly she felt herself raging inside. Her head dipped low as she grasped the stems and bent then in the middles, knuckles turning white. Anger had always been a Nightray family trait, but this was just...something that she couldn't understand. Elliot had killed her and yet she couldn't hate him for that. She couldn't stand in front of him and think any less of him because he couldn't have meant for it to happen. He couldn't! Her brother was a lot of things - courageous, loyal, respectful - and deceitful was absolutely not one of his qualities! To sit before her with that concerned look on his face.

...It pissed her off so much!

She sat up on her knees fully then, leaned over, and smacked him on the shoulder with the flowers, the blooms snapping from the stems and falling to the ground.

"Oh-! You chose to listen to me then, and yet you won't listen to me now?! I came to you and told you what I'd seen! That mark on your chest, the dreams, the memory and you told me I was mad ( ... )
