While there isn't that much social stigma around girl mechanics as there used to be, I would say your best bet would be to go to the college. Most people that would have the time and inclination to take you on as an apprentice would be kinda sketch.
Of course, if you are really serious about getting to know cars, you need to buy a cheap ass hunk of junk and mess around with it. That's the best way to do it imo.
