Last week, it started off innocently enough. "Mama, what's chlorophyll?" I started to explain, but then took out my Blackberry. Called up Wikipedia, and spent the next three blocks reading out loud as we walked. We followed links for things we didn't understand. We gawked at the information. When he was really little, I had to come up with creative ways to make numbers make sense to him... pennies were great, and that's where I actually SAW what square numbers are... whole numbers whose arrangement create perfect squares.

The Kid was trying to find a numeric value for dividing nothing into nothing. So I held out both hands, palms up. "If we have zero food in the house, and I divide it in two, and give you half, how much food do you have?"

That made sense to him. HAH! But I wouldn't be thinking about numbers without him. And Dark Matter, Dark Energy? Fuggedaboudit.
