With Rory completely gone from exhaustion, Tyr having gone back in to help Simera and Linex, and Micas unable to speak, Hardy was left tending to the fire quietly and for all intents and purposes, alone. It was something he was entirely used to, but he was beginning to feel the ache of not really having connected to anyone very well, or having anything constructive to say or do ( ... )

Linex heard Hardy of course, not to mention the thud and crashes of someone new arriving, and had planned to ignore him, but when he mentioned someone new, he hurried up the stairs to see who it was, and if they meant any harm. He grimaced as a rather... gross smell filled his nose, one that seemed to be coming from the stranger...

"Everything okay?" he asked, eyes on the stranger.

Micas kept half her attention on her task, and half on the yard and the other people in it, just in case something happened that required her attention. Rory was obviously not doing very well at the moment, for all he was at least asleep now. But Hardy seemed fine, and got some food in himself as well.

It made her smile when he started singing. It was a different sound, and again his voice lacked the duel-layered fullness of a trianasi. But it was music. And that made this strange place finally home.

Then there was the crash. And she shared a startled glance with him before he rose to investigate. She was half tempted to follow. But she trusted that he would be able to deal with whatever it is, and so returned to her task, checking occasionally on Rory's sleep and the food's progress, waiting for Hardy to return so she could find out what had happened.

Rory shifted in his unwanted slumber, shuffling his limbs fitfully and given to sporadic periods of quick, shallow breathing. Given that the sleep was induced rather than chosen, his subconscious still fought the notion, and he was vaguely aware in some distant part of his perception of crashes and worried voices.

They only added new depth to the unease he felt in this stupor, body atrophied, mind swimming with swirling tendrils of sage green, slinking up his spine, round his limbs, binding him, tighter, he couldn't breathe, tighter, and there was sound filling his ears, it started low, reverberating, shaking him to his core, bubbled up, strangling him with someone else's voice, but it didn't belong to the one speaking it, so it would always be someone else's voice, what was it...

Was it...?

'You're trying so hard to protect these people, Rory,' the voice purred, snaking cold hands around his neck, 'If only you could have protected me...'The grasp tightened, icy tendrils ripping the air from his lungs, and Rory choked, turning ( ... )

After ripping a second steel panel out of the wall, Simera heard a lot of crashing from somewhere on the floor above her. She tilted her head. It stopped quickly enough, rather than going on and on like Rory's pipe-banging had, and so she turned back to her work, gripping the third panel and preparing to rip it out of the wall. She looked up as she heard someone running and saw Hardy go winging past her door ( ... )
