We've had negative energy hanging around our apartment after we first moved in a few years ago. It never did bodily harm but made all family members very uncomfortable even our cat. The middle aged woman in a long dress and manifested to my youngest daughter (that discription was from her) but never threatened but scared my child.
We smudged the entire apartment as well as cast a simple "protection/seal" spell when we were through smudging.
I think smudging is overlooked by most and usually under-rated. When I smudge I never think it's simple. It takes a lot of energy to be thorough. So I defintely would suggest to you - smudge and try a spell that will linger afterwards to protect those who dwell in the home.
What exactly do you do when you smudge? And what kind of spell do you do to protect? I have some pretty negative energy in our condo, especially when my mom came to live with us. My husband isn't prone to feel energies but he felt this one.
I use a smudge stick (that I purchase from my favorite pagan store) and a smudging oil I mix myself made of sage, rosemary, cedarwood with a base of almond oil.
I move from room to room in my apartment starting at the Northern most room and move to the West.
I chant "By my will I banish the darkness and let in the light" as I move in each room filling each place ( in closets, under beds, in corners) with the smoke from the smudge stick - visualizing the smoke as positive light chasing out the darkness.
I trace a pentacle with the smudging oil on each window sill.
I turn to the North "From the North I call to Thee. Blessings of the Spirit be upon this place, blessings of the Spirit be upon this place." I turn to the East "From the East I call to Thee. Blessings of the Spirit be upon this place, blessings of the Spirit be upon this place." I repeat with the South and West.
I pause and fill the entire room with light/positive energy. When the room feels "right" to me - I seal it.
I speak aloud, "This room is sealed. Protected

In addition to the above (and I agree whole heartedly that smudging is often overlooked), make sure when you smudge to leave a window or door open so they have a way out! I would smudge once thoroughly with sage and then follow through again with amber as amber repels negativity. After that, close the window and create your protection :) Good luck with this. xoxo
When I move into a new place or do something like "bless" a newly painted room I use sage. I have a long wrapped leaf bundle. You can get this in most new agey stores. I burn it and circle the entire room. I let the smoke get into each corner and say something like "Please welcome and accept the the new energy." It's a very personal smudging because you are changing the energies of the old to your own. You should do this and then your roommates should too. It's a simple but powerful smudging.
I've lived with many spirits over the years, but only ran into two that were bad/evil... A smudging and house blessing is surely in order if you have "bad feelings", not to mention physical harm... the sooner the better.

I was taught that smudging was for blessing after you'd cleansed a space (yes, practices vary).
Might I suggest that before you smudge, you sweep any negative enegry out of the house (use a broom and literally sweep through every room of your house starting at the main doorway, and then sweep it out of the door to finish). After you have cleansed the house, bless it by smudging or wafting incense concentrating on filling it with positive energy and focusing on the idea that nothing enters your space without your permission.
And on a more practical note...if those scratches are itchy, they could be scabies and should be checked out by your healthcare practitioner.
