Burning items during spellwork

I've been writing some spells involving burning things, such as paper, but whenever I try to light anything it just burns a tiny bit before the flame dies out. Is there something I can put on stuff to make it more flammable but still able to burn safely? I'm using a cauldron, but it's small.

Sometimes paper treated with dyes and other things can burn out when not exposed to a flame for a long time. Sometimes it can be the fact that there is little air in the cauldron. Mine is small and narrow and does this too. Try to hold the paper up until you can safely get a flame, or try other paper. As for treating it with something, I know nothing off the top of my head, sorry.

A couple of drops of methylated spirits.

You can also invest in some flash paper, which burns very fast. You can usually get it at joke or stage magic shops.
