If you were a Pagan child...

... what kind of folklore or Pagan topics would you want to read?

For NaNoWriMo this year, I'm going to be writing a series of children's books about Paganism, adapted for that age group. I'm looking for some inspiration, so if you have suggestions as to what kinds of topics, god/desses, folklore, and so forth that you think you or your kids would ( Read more... )

Well...I was a morbid child, so I'd wanna hear Samhain stories, about graveyards and the thinning of the veil and spooky faeries and stuff. Even now I prefer more hardcore folklore in traditional and popular fiction.

Beyond that, I LOVE LOVE LOVE stories of gods and goddesses and histories and how they created the world and influenced past events, etc. Also moonlore, esbats, and nymphs/kami/spirits!

BEST OF LUCK!!!

I agree, I always liked stories about ghosts and vampires and witches when I was a kid.
Myths are awesome. Faerie tales are always fun too.

Ah, yes, great idea! Those will likely be geared more towards the older end of the picture-book spectrum, but I'm sure I can come up with something for the younger ones as well.

Thanks for all your input, and the luck! :)

I agree with this and was the same way.

I LOVED to read mythology as well. It really helped me appreciate how the world works. In some weird way, it helped me see the magic of everything.

I use to take out scary story books from the library as well as ANY fair tale I could get my hands on. And I don't mean Disney. I hated Disney and how they messed up the fair tales. I loved reading the REAL brothers Grimms tales. . .I would recomend those to a child 7+ though. As they can get rather gorey.

Also, fun little stories made up are great. Last year around this time I was babysitting my cousins after school. I would tell them 3 new Halloween inspired stories. They loved them! They where really simple too. Like; a vampire that showed up at a girls house and kept saying "I want to. . ." but he gets cut off by her screaming several times. In the end he says "I want to . . .use your phone."

I say: Keep it whimsy and magical! The more obscure the better!

These are great, thank you. I especially like the idea of taking fairy tales and giving them a Pagan twist -- that will be fun to accomplish. I'm also going to be doing some research on Greek and other mythologies for ideas.

Thanks! :D I'm considering publishing a few from the series (and perhaps getting an illustrator to do the work that I, well, can't), probably through Lulu.com. If I ever do that, I'll let you know!

I admit I love the sort of books like Francesca Lia Block writes wherein magic and mythology and witchcraft cross over the new world.

Ooh... thank you. Oddly enough, I've never read her works, though on your recommendation, I'll be sure to! :)

Most welcome. Her most popular works are Weetzie Bat and the Dangerous Angels series. Maybe her work isn't strictly pagan but she covers magic and the mystical in every day life, not to mention the topics most shy from, such as abuse and being homosexual in society today.

This is, by far, my favorite kid-fic author. I am hoping someday I'll be able to buy a book with these stories in it to pass on to my Pagan friend's kids.

Strong women that could fight! Also, witches and magic users in general. And love stories. I've liked those since Disney, when I was still in kindergarten...

Essentially, I liked hearing strong tales of strong women, be it physically, mentally, or emotionally.
