Deities, elements

I have some questions.. As not-100%-beginner-anymore I feel like I've learned a lot about witchcraft and Wicca. But there are some things I still don't know how to deal with ( Read more... )

no it doesn't make you any less Wiccan... I'm the same way... I just call her the Goddess... as far as my male deity though a lot of times I go with the chinese fat buddha... have anything to do with my buddha built boyfriend, i wonder? lol I just love how the fat buddha represents happiness and contentedness.
Goddess i go with fairies and mermaids, but yeah nothing specific.
As far as relating to crystals versus elements, i totally agree with you and I'm glad I'm not the only one. I love crystals and stones, and don't get me wrong, I appriciate a warm fire, a hot bath, a cool breeze, the beautiful forest, but I'm not much of a four corners type.
Hope that helps some.

First, as to deity...sometimes it takes a person years to find a specific one that they call their own, and there are those that don't ever find that it feels right to work with one and only one at all. Lord and Lady are always acceptable addresses. It's better to work with a nebulous deity set than to try to force yourself into a preconceived notion of which to work with.

With the elements, I'd suggest doing some one-on-one meditations and works to get to know them better individually before you try to incorporate them into a larger scaled working. Spend every day of a week (or a month if you need to) just handling one element. Notice how it feels in your hands (or to your skin), how your body reacts to it, how your mind sees it. Working individually with each will allow you to build up a relationship with them that is right for you.

My birthday is on Juyl 23rd. I'm Leo, my Aszendent is Virgo :). Leo means fire, doesn't it? I guess this could fit for me, but I don't feel a strong connection with fire either.

But I don't know much about spirit though.. I haven't worked with it yet.

i will be honest with you.. as far as stong connection.. i have never really developed one with one particular element. just because i feel pretty equally connected to all of them.. air is the toughest for me though.
buuuut.
since your ascending is a virgo.. that earth/fire combo can be tough.
im exactly the opposite.. im a virgo with a leo ascendent... haha

good luck tho..
and
try working with spirit.. it might solve a lot of your deity issues.

Depends a great deal on what you mean, Does it make you less of a Wiccan, by not worshiping in the manner of that religion? Yes. Does it mean you can't follow a Neo-Wiccan path, or that with time, work, and patience you won't forge the connections that are a foundation to Wicca? No.
So, the question is, have you found a method of worship that works for you, meets your goals, and meets your needs? If so, you're fine- just be aware that it isn't traditional Wicca that you practice.

The elements are a broader question, are you seeking a personal relationship with beings from/of each element, a sense of energy as each element called upon joins your casting, both, or something else. Each one requires different work and focus, but each can be built up.
Good luck.

Well, the question about "less of a Wiccan" had to do with worshipping The Goddess instead of a particular deity, which, if combined with The God is actually more Wiccan than Neo-Wiccan, if I understand things right.

Isn't it the more modern forms of paganism that are more geared to specific deities for specific situations/people? That's one of the main differences I keep in mind: traditional Wicca has The Goddess and the God, with many names, while other forms of modern paganism have more of an emphasis on many distinct deities (polytheism) and tend to promote the idea of a patron deity. Am I completely off-base here?

In Traditional Wicca the God and Goddess have specific names that are kept oathbound. The God and the Goddess of the Wica are not any other God or Goddess. So in Traditional Wicca you can not call upon any old God or Goddess in a Wiccan ritual, only the specific God and Goddess of the Wica.

Neo-Wicca tends to allow any God or Goddess to fill in for the God and the Goddess of the Wica. Also the concept that all Gods and all Goddess are the same is more common in Neo-Wicca.

Okay, that makes sense! Thanks. Still the Goddess and God, but with specific names. Not the same thing as hard polytheism, but more specific than what I was thinking.

I'm so used to all the supposedly "Wiccan" books that talk about finding your patron, etc. that I forgot about the "all Gods and Goddesses are the same" issue. I knew that wasn't Wicca, but forgot that it's the other side of Neo-Wicca from what I'm more used to.

Try to do some elemental meditation.

A good book to check out is "Way of four" by Deborah Lipp, or even "Earth, Air, Fire Water".

Both have great ideas for small meditations and exercises you can use to focus on one element and try to become more in tune with it. Work on all four and perhaps you will feel a difference in your next ritual! <3
