For real?

I kind of really, really doubt the 'would have told you years ago' part, because even (especially!) after the books had become so hugely popular, her publishers (particularly the American ones) would probably have begged, pleaded, bribed and just about done anything to keep her not only from putting this into the books more explicitly, ( Read more... )

I won't have time to really read & think through all this until Friday/weekend-ish; I grant you it's not entirely unproblematic, but on the whole I'm still on the side of 'awesome', including even the way she handled it, because it didn't allow those who would have done so to discard the character (or the books) from the beginning because of his sexuality; instead they were forced to confront this in a character they (and their children) have grown to love and admire over the course of seven books, and maybe, just maybe, at least some of them will eventually come to realise that it doesn't change a thing.
