I found this absolutely fascinating, because I sort-of-follow Smallville too (S4 is airing here at the moment: we just had the 'China' episode last night) and these are all the sort of thoughts I have about it when I'm watching but am too lazy to write up coherently. The Luthors are the main reason I watch: they and Chloe are the only really interesting characters in the show, and I think Rosenbaum has made something genuinely complex out of Lex (I'm reluctant to credit the writers too much, because so much of the complexity is in how he delivers the lines, not what he actually says). I really like your interpretation of Lex's story here: it makes a lot of sense out of what I've been seeing lately.
Personally, I'm none too convinced that Lionel's 'conversion' is genuine. And I also like Lois. I liked her from the moment she turned around and actually defended herself in the first episode of the season, which is something I never thought I'd see a female character on Smallville do. Also, she's an adult, albeit a young adult.

Wow - this is another instance where I'm absolutely amazed that someone actually made it through my 3000+ words rambling ... It's really kind of sad that one has to go to such lengths not even so much to analyse, but to at least make a minimum of sense out of what one is seeing.

You're probably right there. And S4 I felt even he was occasionally at a loss about what exactly he was supposed to do with his character.

I wish. The self-righteousness was rather nauseating, while it lasted.

~grins~ I've been getting exactly the same feeling in the last few episodes.

Oh, rats. You mean, it's meant to be real? I keep catching a glint of self-awareness and strategy under the gentle sanctimony, and I rather liked it. Maybe this is another case of an actor doing what s/he can to overcome scripts that don't cohere...
So it would seem, but it's never made really clear. John Glover does a DVD commentary, but only for the episode where the body-switch happens, I'd have to listen to that again (only browsed through it the first time) if he says something that throws any light on what's (supposed to be) happening.
If you've just had the China episode, it'll be resolved (or not, as the case may be), in two episodes' time... :)

Oh dear, YES. That was such a refreshing moment.
