Why even have a "normal range" for lab results if the doctor isn't going to take it seriously should something test outside of the normal range ( Read more... )

I hear you on that. What my doctor explained to me about my outside the norm thyroid result was that results somewhat outside the norm can occur without it necessarily meaning anything. She said only if the result was outside the norm over time, upon repeat testing, that it was a cause for concern. Of course, this doesn't reassure me at all, so I know where you're coming from!!

I think sometimes it's only bad for it to be outside normal if it's also connected to something else; like it's not a problem for me to have low oxygen, as long as my breathing is normal. It's only if I'm not breathing well that they start worrying about my oxygen level.

And I've had things go outside of normal ranges and then fix themselves -- I had low good-cholesterol two years ago, and it went back to normal on its own.
