Battle of the Planets had good English dubbing but the story was completely hacked apart so it doesn't count to me.
I found the original Yamato series online and downloaded the fan subtitled version. Wow, it's very similar and very different at the same time. The American version cut out lots of violence and all references to the deaths of the Yamato crew members. Also, the Yamato takes lots of damage in combat that is never shown in the American version. So, the Yamato doesn't have nigh-impenetrable armour that the American version would lead you to believe.
I'll send you the link if you want to check them out. There's also the original movies and they're a good chunk into subtitling the Comet Empire now. I think that the American version cut out some critical animation on how the Andromeda went down and I'd like to see if my suspicions are correct. But I'll have to be patient.
Yeah I have a special place in my heart for Star Blazers in particular. I would love to see the originals. The hack job in the original was pretty obvious when I watched Duff's copy.
sigh - I am also a member of the Yamato-fan-club... although I seem to remember a fair amount of damage to the ship in various battles, as well as crew deaths... the original version had more?!? (I saw it on TV, back in the 80's.)
I adored it because it was so dark compared to 'standard' animation. Like an animated version of 'Das Boot' (and the subtitled version is the only version that should be seen, IMO)...
I hear you about emotionally unfulfilling endings. I watched Black Lagoon all season and was left essentially on the brink of orgasm at the end of the first part of the season finale. And I won't buy anime unless its' subtitled.
This si one of those areas where Solid and I disagree a fair amount so I'll keep it short. :) I enjoy any series that is well done regardless of story changes or dubbing. Quality is all I care about (well, that and fun, a high-quality unfun show is painful to watch). I can certainly empathize with haters of dubbing since there is a huge amount of crappy dubbed series out there, and to see a good series redone badly is heartbreaking. However, there are well-done dubbed serieses out there (the first Tenchi Muyo comes to mind, since they picked American actors to fit the style of the original Japanese actors and characterizations) and I'm not going to avoid them just because they speak english. :)

Quality is always an issue I agree. Though overall quality is besides the issue of my argument. A well acted anime can still be horrible regardless of language.
I'm just saying in terms of an equally good quality anime, I'd rather watch it as it was originally intended rather than reinterpreted. It's the artist in me. My statement was harsh and there are exceptions to be sure.
