Eternity

A slightly wistful but contented sigh escaped Yuri Fujimori as she stepped out onto the balcony of the home she and her husband, Jiro, shared. It was a beautiful, clear night: the air outside was pleasant and refreshing against the skin exposed by her nightgown and there was a slight breeze that tossed her hair and rustled at her clothing. Her already serene mood increased as she leaned against the railing of the balcony and overlooked the city before her briefly before tilting her head back to gaze up at the stars.

Yuri’s lips curled into a soft smile. She loved looking at the night sky. The bright specks of light that twinkled back at her were as constant and never aging as Yuri herself, so she felt a special kinship with them.

The Wolfen Queen had just celebrated her 80th birthday, though she didn’t look a day over her 20s physically. The only real signs of age were nearly indiscernible flecks of gray in her hair; otherwise…she looked exactly as young and beautiful as she did when Jiro first met her. It had been her decision to become what her husband was. He had explained to her that when Wolfen take a mate, they were bound to them forever. She had liked that concept: the romantic nature of it thrilled her as much as being with Jiro did so when he had asked her permission to make her truly his, she had accepted eagerly.

Yuri didn’t regret a minute of it. She and Jiro had been through everything together: good times and bad, the sweet and the bitter of it all. And somehow, they made it through together, just by loving each other as deeply and passionately as they had when they first fell. Their love was also as constant and steady as the stars she gazed at.

It made her smile grow as she thought about everything she’d been through in her long life…a life that wasn’t about to end any time soon. Jiro was definitely the best thing to ever happen to her. He’d given her a life, a home…wonderful children who had grown to have kids of their own. Her life had taken so many unexpected turns…but she wouldn’t trade a single moment.

Suddenly, a deep, familiar voice jolted her from her reverie and a pair of strong, warm hands placed a plush robe over her shoulders. “You’re going to catch cold if you stand out here like that…” there was a light brush of soft lips at her neck and she instinctively leaned back into Jiro’s embrace, sighing happily.

“Not if I have you to keep me warm, like always…”

Her husband chuckled, glancing up at the sky like she had been, his arms passing around her waist and pulling her back against him with a gentle squeeze. “Were you star gazing?”

“Like on our first date,” Yuri giggled. “Or don’t you remember?”

There was a playful growl. “Oh I remember…” he nipped at her ear gently.

Grinning, she twisted into his arms. “A lot of things have changed since then,” she reached up to ruffle his hair. Like Yuri, the only signs of age on Jiro were some flecks of gray in his naturally unruly dark waves.

“A lot of things haven’t,” he replied, leaning into her touch. “And there’s one thing that will never, ever change: my love for you.”

The look of utter devotion in his eyes, coupled with the romantic smile on his handsome face, made Yuri’s heart flutter. She wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned up to give him a tender kiss. “I know. It’s the same with my love for you.”

He deepened the embrace before pulling back and nuzzling affectionately at her. “I have something for you…”

“Oh? A surprise?” Yuri smirked. “I’ve gotten several of those today.”

Jiro chuckled. “Stay here. I’ll be right back…” and he ducked back inside.

Yuri shook her head, laughing softly, turning around to once again look over the city as she waited for him to return.

Those arms wrapped around her again only moments later, and she blinked in surprise as a small, but decadent-looking chocolate cake was presented to her, a single candle lit and placed in the center.

“Make a wish,” Jiro whispered, making Yuri shiver pleasantly.

Shaking her head, she reached back to tease at his hair. “I don’t need to…I have exactly what I want.”

He gazed at her for a long moment before carefully putting the cake aside and then, before she could even blink, he swept her into his arms for the most breath-taking kiss she’d ever experienced.

Yuri gasped against his mouth, her body arching instinctively against his. Jiro’s fingers delved into her hair and the pleasant heat of his body pressed against her as he let her know with that kiss that his passion for her had not died down at all, not even after 60 years together.

Tugging back reluctantly in order to breathe, Yuri gazed up at him, lips still parted, breathing labored as she tried to recover.

“Wish granted,” he murmured, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

“Just what I wanted,” she replied, stroking over his chest and squealing happily when he suddenly scooped her up and began carrying her inside, pressing another kiss to her lips that reminded her exactly why she had chosen to spend eternity with him.
