"Fuck!" Willie was awake the second the scream started, reaching for a gun and a gas mask that were no longer beside him. It took him a moment to realize where he actually was, a treehouse not France, and another to realize that the lieutenant was the one who had screamed. He stared at him for another quick moment before getting up and carefully coming over to him. "Sir? Lieutenant Prior?"

Prior started violently at the sound of the voice. There was a little moonlight coming in through the window, but all he could see was a dim, faceless shape standing by his bed. Oh Jesus fucking Christ, he was still dreaming. "Get away. Get away from me," he gasped, pressing himself against the wall, rigid with terror.

Willie stopped moving and stood there, trying to decide what to do next. "It's me, sir. Willie Dunne. I'm not something terrible or whatever you screamed about, I promise, Bill." The lieutenant said his name was Billy, but it was a bit too close to his own name for him to be able to say it easily. Bill would do, he thought. "What do you want me to do?"

It was talking to him - the thing or ghost or whatever it was, it was talking to him. The words didn't register, just the fact that it was still there. He put his hands over his face again, trying to will it to go away. "Please. Please leave me alone. Please."
