The buffet is done

You can find it here, so I don't upset some of my friends with wood abuse.

Overall, I'm thrilled with it.  The storage is phenomenal and we love having the appliances off the counter.  The mixer is just a wee bit too tall, but without everything else crowding it, the floor of the pantry works just fine to keep it off the counter.  The depth (18 ( Read more... )

I keep wanting to do something crazy with our buffet/china cabinet, but Conall won't let me.

Definitely not what I would have done with it, but if you're happy with it, that's the important part.

Agree with the poster below noting you seriously don't want to overload it with the top-add, or it will collapse. Also note the style of shelf support, and - if you intend to put anything of any substantial weight on it - make sure you add cross-member supports inside to help.

Just to be safe, I'd add a false-bottom inside, put any- and everything heavy on it, and use the upper shelves for increasingly lightweight items regardless of size. Likewise with the drawers, if you're putting anything heavy inside, make sure the weight is well distributed, and expect trouble opening and closing them. Unmentionables don't weigh nearly as much as a collection of OhmigodWhere'sMyFavouriteSpatulaThat'sNotIt! utensils.

Way cool. I have one that has a drawer that goes all the way across the top. Because of a century of putting heavy stuff on top of it, I actually have to lift the center front edge to shut the top drawer.

I wonder if you would get further removing the top and putting a new one on because that's about the only thing that would save mine.
