Thank you!
I'm really glad you think so! I think Tahar Rahim did with the role as much as it could be done to make the Seal prince as a complex and emotional character. But if the movie took a bit more time to flesh it out, it would benefit both the protagonists and the antagonists. (IDK, it seems a bit cheap to be the hero on the expense of another character's vilification.)

This is beautifully and sensitively written - the death of a child is always a tragedy but all the more so here, when it must be at the hand of his own father. In his own way Liathan is as helpless as the little boy, and this lets us feel sympathy for him where the movie doesn't really allow us to.

I'm glad if Liathan appears more sympathetic here. I think he could (and should) be in the movie too, but he doesn't get enough time/attention.

Thank you a lot!

This was heartbreaking and haunting. I never thought I would feel so much for the Seal Prince during that final scene in the river. Very well done.

Beautifully written, and so sad. A very perceptive look into Liathan's mind and heart.

Thank you!
I'm glad you liked it, especially if you think Liathan didn't seem OOC.

His wife and mother of his son will not forgive him, never forgive, but she will have to accept. It is the way of things. Not all boys live enough to become men; some die pale and soft, their skin never to turn gray like the seals’.

Liathan fixes his eyes on Esca and imagines he is cutting Esca’s throat and not his son’s. He pulls the blade. It’s as easy as slicing a roebuck open, as impossible as breathing under water.
In a flash it all blurs into nothing, though he still sees, sees everything.

Only his searing fury and ghostly pain exist, vibrate, and burn, and Liathan feels like he is cutting off his own flesh.

Oh god. I want to quote this whole thing back at you because it's all just wonderful, heartbreaking and poetic and real. Somebody needed to write this fic (because of the strange half-hearted way the movie handles this character, I mean) and I'm so glad you did it, and so, so beautifully, too. Bookmarked for many future re-reads! :)
