Out of Mind Footnotes

Dear f-list, sorry for spamming, but LJ doesn't allow posts as long as I would want.
I think I need a "Sometimes I don't feel much love for you, LJ" tag.

OUT OF MIND YET INSIDE IT - FOOTNOTES:

-I assume the movie AiW 2010 is taking place somewhere in the sixties of 19th century; for specific reasons (it sounded too cool to send Tarrant as one for the first passengers through the Suez Canal) I set it during 1869. At any rate, I wanted the story to take place after 1860, so Alice and Tarrant (and I) don't have to bother with the opium wars and the Indian rebellion.

-I changed Tarrant's surname in the real world, as 'Hightopp' sounded too Underlandish. Hightopp is still Tarrant's surname in Underland.
I chose the surname 'Alden,' because the possible meanings/origin for this (sur)name are 'old friend,' 'old town/old hill,' 'high town/high hill.' Since Tarrant is Alice's old friend, and the meaning reminded me enough of 'Hightopp,' I thought it fit.

-I changed the ‘real-life’ names of Mallymkun and Thackery for the same reason.

-Tarrant's age - Tarrant is younger in real life than in Underland; the reason for this is waxwafer.

-toddletorte: a cake that makes you grow younger (It might have side effects like changing the color of hair or discoloring it. It's speculated that the White Queen has been baking it for herself for years now.)
-waxwafer: a wafer that makes you grow older (It might have other side effects, like changing the color of the skin, hair, or eyes.)

-I'm still sad that I wasn’t able to include 'perukecreme,' the cream that makes your hair grow after you eat it. It's rumored to leave a dry taste in the mouth, which is why it’s suggested to drink plenty of tea while eating it.

-Khattuz Day: the word 'khattuz' supposedly means 'hood, cowl' in Proto-Germanic
-Gemeddous Day: from the Old English ' gemædde ' (pl.) 'out of one's mind'

-I apologize to the Tarrant/Mirana shippers for overlapping the White Queen and Tarrant's mother - I wanted Underland to make sense from Tarrant's point of view too.

-I didn't include anything about Tarrant's grandmother and grandfather because I thought they weren't necessary for the story, plus I wanted to keep the parallel with Underland, where parents of the White and the Red Queen are mentioned only briefly.

-Don't ask me about the Scottish sailor; he's a mystery to me, so I believe he's Absolem. (What, you think the great Absolem can’t speak with Scottish accent? Tsk, tsk.)

-The railway accident Tarrant mention is the ‘Clayton Tunnel rail crash, England, August 25, 1861, Brighton, Sussex; combination of faulty equipment and signalmen's errors result in collision in railway tunnel. 23 killed, 176 injured in a densely-packed excursion train.'

-The resin called ‘dragon blood’ actually exists.

-Does anyone else think the Jabberwocky would be more fun if spelled as 'Jabberwalky?'

-Timeline:
1846 - Tarrant is born in India, child of a British soldier and a middle class woman (who had 'too much adventurous sense')
1849, February, March - Tarrant's father is presumed dead (after the Battle of Gujrat, India - today's Pakistan); later that year, Tarrant's mother returns with Tarrant to England; Underland might be Tarrant's twisted and fantastical recollection of his early childhood (It's unknown whether Tarrant is aware that he's been born in India (look at the timeline and the notes next to it) - his aunt didn't like to talk about anything that regarded her sister's marriage and especially anything that regarded Tarrant's father.)
1852 - Tarrant enters Underland for the first time (Tarrant is 6 years old)
1855 - Tarrant's mother dies; Tarrant enters a boarding school (Tarrant is 9)
1860 - Tarrant meets Alice in Underland for the first time (Tarrant is 14)
1869, August - Tarrant meets Alice in Underland for the second time (Tarrant is 23)
1869, November - Tarrant travels to India
1870, February - Tarrant reaches Hong Kong and meets Alice

As far as the timeline in Underland is concerned, I imagined Tarrant meets Alice for the first time after the Red Queen became the sovereign of Underland and after he met Mallymkun and Thackery.

alice in wonderland, massive crankiness, omg a fic, patience is not my virtue
