[Tis cool. Sometimes, RL sucks ass.]

Kevin had been out looking for food again. He disliked leaving Miss River alone for any length of time, but they needed to eat.

He'd managed, a couple times, to get a proper day job sweeping or cleaning, or something. Enough to get them some food for the evening, if nothing else. Kevin had never thought that all those stories his grandpappy had told him of World War II would come in handy.

There were patrols on the ground, and Kevin attempted to keep his head down. Hearing a patrol begin harassing someone, he stiffened, and had to resist the urge to go help, but instead followed the example of several others and just walked on. His scarf slipped and he hurriedly pulled it back up.

It could easily be said that Balthier was less invested in his work than some others. Quite a bit less, honestly. Despite the courtesy the Avaticans had shown him, he still had no particular loyalty to either side. His face curled into a displeased expression as he heard that patrol yelling at some person around the corner, but he chose not to do anything about it. In all likelihood whoever was doing the yelling outranked him and trying to step in would do no good at all ( ... )

Patrol or random stranger that looked vaguely familiar? Neither was a good choice. He just had to pick the lesser of two evils. Well, if one went missing, then there wouldn't be that much of an outcry. Having to deal with an entire patrol, again, would mean that he'd become hunted and that wouldn't help Miss River at all.

Sighing, he ducked his head and followed the man. His hands worked in his pockets, and he finally got his gloves off. Cold, but it gave him a weapon. They slid into a small alley, and Kevin stopped, leaning his back against the cold stone of one building, so he could see into the alley and out of it. The patrol stopped and harassed someone he'd been near and he felt himself relax slightly.

"What ya want?" Kevin asked, keeping his voice low and muffled by the scarf.

"Some gratitude that is," Balthier commented by way of not quite a reply. The patrol seemed to have stopped to bother someone else, but he kept moving until he found the out of the way spot along an alleyway he'd noticed when he passed before. They would be able to speak freely there, at least for now.

"There are no patrols here," he informed the other man, looking around the area before turning to address the not-quite-stranger more fully, with a raised eyebrow. "And I doubt you wish them to find you, hm?" He still wasn't 100% sure that he had seen this man on the rebel ship, but for now he would play as if he was certain he had and hope the man gave some indication that he was right.
