The short version is that I love it. I have parents visiting, so I rewatched the first 2 eps with them so they could see it, and then we watched Friday's part 3 together.

SGU: Air (parts 1-3)...I talk a lot. )

bsg, sgu, sg-1

I LOVE THAT VIDEO SO MUCH. OH DANIEL. In fact, now that you've linked it, I must watch it again for the 100th time.

Oooh, off to watch that vid, thanks!

(SG-1 & Buffy were totally my first online fandoms. The love for them will never die!)

I watched the premiere with someone who hadn't made it far enough through SG1 to get the communication stones - it's a fantastic piece of continuity for the loyal fanbase, but apparently kind of difficult to pick up on otherwise. Ah well.

The Greer thing made me cringe a lot at first too, but then he suddenly became the only competent person on the team and it was ♥. Though if he looked a lot more like Starbuck, you can bet that this shift would have been framed very differently.

I was wondering if the stones would be confusing for new people. Maybe they should have taken more time to explain those better?

I can't think of another show/franchise that didn't start with a level of advanced tech, but instead built them up over the course of many seasons. X-Files maybe? But they didn't end up with a ton of tech & (human) spaceships like this.

Though if he looked a lot more like Starbuck, you can bet that this shift would have been framed very differently.Very, very true! No doubt he would be a fan favorite in that case. I suppose that's why it's a stereotype though. There's not an Angry Violent Blonde Woman stereotype. Although maybe Starbuck will change that ( ... )

I was thinking that more shots of characters in the bodies that they're inhabiting (to show the two simultaneous POVs) might go a long way to help people quickly 'get' communication stones.

Just spent far too long trying to think of any other long runnning series which accumulates lots of advanced tech as it goes on too. X Files stayed pretty firmly grounded in earth stuff the whole time. And Trek and Who were immerced in advanced tech from the start. Huh.

I've been told that the Deadalus randomly popping in in SGA was also a bit jarring if you don't keep up to date with SG1 - this franchise is a kind of impenetrable looking fandom to jump into. But awesomely rewarding if you stick it out.

The Greer/Starbuck archetype parallel seemed painfully obvious to me too, except for how it really isn't parallel at the same time. : /
