Multi-sourcin' all over the place.

Ok, I've made a post to multividious that I hope clears up what can be posted there. I'm glad I chose the name I did now, because it doesn't have multi-fandom or crossover in the title. Those are 2 sub-genres under the heading of Multi-Source (woohoo for made-up words!). This follows some discussions here and here. One of the reasons why I didn't want to call ( Read more... )

Hmm.

Do you consider a vid that uses Angel and Buffy footage to do a Faith character study a multi-source vid?

No, I wouldn't. I think the source has to be unrelated, so I would say spin-offs are part of the collective fandom for that universe, and therefore part of the same source...BUT is that a clear enough line? This is the sticky gray area. Some spin-offs are vastly different from the original show. And going by that poll I took a while ago, I think it was about 30-40% of people consider them different separate entities & their own fandoms (BTVS/Ats is probably more closely tied than other spin-offs ( ... )

I was just thinking about the same thing while making a vid for VVC. I'm having my own problems deciding what is what. Like an SGA and SG1 vid. It's the same universe, so technically not multifandom, but going by that guideline Lost and Alias wouldn't be a multifandom vid because they are in the same universe. (Drive Shaft was in both series, so they are the same universe) And then what about a Highlander vid that uses stuff from the movies, tv show, and spin offs.

I'm working on a constructed reality-type vid and I keep going back and forth between thinking it's multifandom and multisource. I can't wrap my head around which it is. :)

Until recently, I didn't even know there was such a fine line when dealing with these types of vids.

Hey, until recently I just called anything that used more than one source mutli-fandom, so what do I know? These definitions are all kinda subjective. That's why it's been difficult coming up with a clear-cut definition & rules for the comm.

but going by that guideline Lost and Alias wouldn't be a multifandom vid because they are in the same universe. (Drive Shaft was in both series, so they are the same universe)

Hey, weird! I totally forgot about that! Yeah, there's no way I would call a Lost/Alias vid single-fandom.

I think I may just leave the whole spinoff thing unspecified until it actually becomes an issue. Let people make their own judgment calls on that.
