[After leaving Yue to herself, Sokka decides he better go talk to Suki. Which means hunting her down before she wanders off too far outside. He knows he should have talked to her about this beforehand, but in his defense, he didn't really have much of a chance to.]

[Suki had headed back to her book at the couch, though she's in the middle of packing up and getting ready to find a nice tree to curl up under. Hopefully far away from the house- the atmosphere is pretty weird for her right now.]

[Oh. Well... he's lucky then. Once he spots her, he'll speak up. He knows that Suki might not want to talk about this right now, but he kind of needs to.]

... Suki. We should... we should probably talk.

[Suki heard him approaching, but she'd half-wanted him to avoid her; she's still feeling tense and - to be quite honest - disappointed, and with those feelings come shame. This is Sokka's chance to help and spend time with Yue, a girl whom he'd loved and lost. She gets it, Yue is important to him.

It's still not a pleasant experience to have her here, though. With him. And of course, she can't say any of that, so her only reply is-]

...Probably.

[He can't even begin to start wondering about what Suki is thinking, because he's so wrapped up in his own thoughts and what Yue is probably doing right now, which he suspects is crying, that it's really hard to sort through all of it.]

Let's... go by the river then. [This is something he doesn't want anyone else to hear, because this is stuff that only Katara and Aang know about. So it's not something he'll share lightly.]

[Suki pauses, then nods quietly, setting down the book and stepping towards the door. She sort of wants to take his hand and pull him along after her, but... she just doesn't feel comfortable about that yet, not until she hears what he has to say. So for now she'll just walk with him.]

[Once they're by the river, he'll just sit down in a good dry spot, waiting for her to join him. He's quiet as he tries to figure out what to say.]

I guess... you know what happened. Kinda. The play was sort of accurate about some stuff.

Do I need to know what's missing? [Her tone is wary, though she's trying to be fair to him, really. It was funny during the play, sure, but now that she's met the girl face to face she's not interested in how into it they were back then.]

... well, yeah. [He stares at the water. Okay... let's do this.]

We met at the North Pole. And I guess we just kind of clicked. I know you probably don't want to hear about all that, so... anyway, nothing could come of it anyway. She was engaged to this guy named Hahn, who would become the next chief of the North Pole. She wasn't in love with him, it was all for her tribe.

... anyway, she told me we couldn't be together because of that. But then the Fire Nation showed up, the biggest fleet I've ever seen. [Even bigger than the airship fleet they took down.] I volunteered to fight, but her father pulled me off the mission after I kind of umm... punched her fiancée for being a jerk. [But given how that mission went... it's just as well.]

He asked me to protect her during the invasion. The whole Fire Nation at the gates and that was my job. It was something I should have been able to do.

[The story isn't over, but it should be obvious where it's going.]

[And he couldn't protect her. It's so obvious it's practically hovering in the air, and she can't speak for fear of saying it, of opening that wound before he's ready. It couldn't have been easy for him to see that in the play, and she'd teased him about it... because she hadn't really understood.

She wants to understand, now. It hurts, but she wants it.]

[It's the same reason he had overreacted when they passed the Serpent's Pass, even though he hadn't explained it all then.

He swallows the lump already forming in his throat.]

... anyway, Admiral Zhao had found out about the Spirit Oasis... it's where the Moon and Ocean Spirit resided. In fish form, I guess. Aang had went there to try to get there help, so he crossed over in the Spirit World. But... he got captured by a firebender, so we went after him.

[He intentionally doesn't say it was Zuko. Because it's really, really easy to want to blame him right now. But it was just... circumstances. The only man to blame is Zhao.]

... when we got back, it was too late, Zhao had killed the Moon Spirit. The only part of it that was left was in Yue. Without the Moon Spirit, all the waterbenders lost their power, the sky went dark, and it would have been the end right there.

[Except... it wasn't.]

[She's realizing that too, actually- his overprotective behaviour and his words when she'd questioned him about it make a lot of sense now. And they'd been talking right beneath the moon, too...

No wonder he refused her that night.]

... Yue had part of the Moon Spirit's life because she had been revived by its powers as a baby. Hence the white hair thing. So... she gave up her life to become the Moon Spirit. And that... was it. I never saw her after that.

[She wasn't dead. But that's what had made it both easier and harder. At first it had made it easy to try and get past the huge feeling of loss, just knowing she was still around and 'with him'. But knowing she was still around meant he never had to deal with her 'death'.

He lets out a heavy sigh before turning to Suki.]

She doesn't know any of that will happen either. But... [... he's already let her down. Again. Differently this time, but it still happened.]

I don't know what to do. [This... from the idea guy.]

[Sokka not knowing what to do is pretty alarming, but she can't blame him for it. Her hand half-lifts to touch the necklace - she's been toying with it an awful lot since she got it, for varying reasons - but before she touches it, she changes her mind and reaches out to his hand instead, fingers curling around it.]

Do you think... if she knew, she'd be able to change things? Or would it just hurt her to be here, with that hanging over her head?

[Most people who go home don't even remember this place. But with that sort of decision hanging over your head... no wonder he's having trouble.]

No one else ever has. [If anyone could have, it was Roku... or Azula. But as far as he knows, nothing changed.]

How do I even make that choice? It's not even mine to make, it's her life. I don't know what's worse, lying to her or forcing her to have to deal with that and everything else too. What does she have to look forward to if she finds out?

[A life of solitude as a spirit... or a life here in Luceti, dealing with Sokka having moved on. It's... just not fair.]

Maybe you could just... not talk about it? It's not really the same as lying to her. If it's not your choice, you can't really make that kind of decision.

[She really has no idea what she'd do if she was in his position - though now the lie is shared between them all, really. It's just not fair.]
