Kevin tugs loosely at the rough plaid fabric of the couch beneath him, digging his fingernails in every so often just to have something to do. He’s still not sure why he bothered to come to this boring high school party where everyone is cooler than him and won’t talk to him because he’s “that weird Jesus kid who used to be home schooled”. He doesn’t even drink or swear or ever talk back to his parents. It’s not that Kevin doesn’t have friends, it’s just that Kevin’s friends happen to be his younger brothers who are still homeschooled and not at this party. So Kevin has no friends here.
He’s still sitting there ten minutes later, foot tapping to the beat of the song playing that he had never heard and he is contemplating leaving when a few guys come over and sit on the couch and chairs around him. They’re all talking animatedly and one of them, a nice laid-back looking fellow with a scruffy beard in flip-flops has unwrapped a foil package to reveal an abundance of delicious looking brownies. Kevin won’t ask for one because it would be rude, he doesn’t know these people so he just sits there, fingers tapping on knees until scruffy-bearded dude looks at him with bleary eyes and says “Hey, I’m Jon! Want one?”
It would be rude to say no to the chocolaty treat held in the hand of this nice stranger so Kevin nod s his head, takes the brownie and says thank you. Kevin sits back and eats his yummy dessert, while the group of guys talk and laugh and they occasionally say something to him, making him part of the group and apparently one of them is a butcher, or at least that’s what they call him, Butcher, and he’s nice enough to hand Kevin another brownie. Kevin likes brownies, they’re warm and gooey and sweet and nice. Kevin’s in such a good mood and these guys are so friendly and there is no reason for him not to take a third tasty treat when it is offered so kindly.
Kevin is giggling. Kevin is giggling a lot. Ryan said something funny and all the guys laughed so Kevin did too. He doesn’t know what it is that Ryan said that caused the laughter and no one is laughing now but Kevin is still giggling. Kevin’s face is practically splitting with his lazy wide grin because he has made friends and he is happy but his head is heavy so he’s resting it on the back of the couch while he stares at the ceiling. He’s never seen such an interesting ceiling and he lets a giggle out for each of the weird patterns and pretty pictures he sees in the popcorn ceiling above his head until he hears a not so happy voice from far away… or maybe it’s just a couple feet in front of him.
“What the hell are you guys doing?” the unhappy voice is coming from a frowning man with brown hair and a face that Kevin thinks is pretty in a manly way and Kevin’s sure he’s seen that pretty manly face somewhere.
“Don’t be so grumpy Mike, have a brownie.”
“He can’t dude, we ate them all.”
Kevin isn’t sure who is saying what but they’re all laughing and he’s giggling again and then he’s being lifted up from the couch by a hand on his arm. It’s a strong hand that is connected to a very strong arm that is connected to a Mike. This Mike is now dragging poor little innocent giggly Kevin through the house and out the back door of the crowded house despite the halfhearted protests of his friends on the couch.
Kevin stumbled along partially behind him, he doesn’t remember his feet being this big and why are they walking so quickly and oh yeah, “Why are you kidnapping me? I don’t even know you.”
Kevin’s captor stops at this and turns to look at him, frowning, “You don’t even know me.”
Kevin nods and rolls his eyes as if to say duh.
Mike sighs and says, “I’m not kidnapping you.”
Kevin giggles. “Well that’s a relief. I don’t really feel like getting kidnapped tonight.” And for some reason when Kevin thinks about being kidnapped, Kevin napped, napping of the Kevin, he starts to giggle again. Mike is rolling his eyes and running his hand through his unkempt hair. His hair is brown like chocolate. Ooh, Kevin could use another brownie right now. He’s feeling kind of hungry. His stomach’s growling for love… or rather, food. And now he’s giggling again… or did he ever stop giggling?
"Kid, what were you thinking?" Mike shakes his head exasperatedly.
“I like chocolate and your friends were so nice to give me some of their chocolate, I didn’t even ask. You have really nice chocolate-giving friends and it was nice of them to sit with me when I was all alone and give me a brownie. I like brownies. You have really nice friends,” Kevin giggles in the middle of his ramblings before continuing “And a nice face and nice hair. I like your hair. It’s brown. Like chocolate! But don’t worry; I won’t eat your hair.” He adds another giggle because he seems to have so many giggles inside of him that need to get out. He’s pretty sure he doesn’t normally giggle this much.
Mike closes his eyes and puts his hand on his forehead, as if he was developing a headache. Now Kevin remembers where he has seen Mr. Grumpy Pants before. Pretty manly faced Mike spends most of Kevin’s Calculus class with his pretty manly face resting on his desk in the back of the room, taking a nap.
Kevin claps his hands together in happiness and attacks Mike with a sort of halfway hug, “Mike Carden! I know who you are.”
Mike opens his eyes and looks up, there seems to be a small smile pulling at the corners of his mouth before he shrugs Kevin off of his shoulders and starts walking.
“Come on kid, I’m taking you home.”
Kevin skips along beside him, quiet except for the occasional giggle and Mike’s frown is gone, replaced with an almost expressionless look.
They walk in silence most of the way to Kevin’s house, and if Kevin weren’t in such a good mood he probably would have wondered how Mike seemed to know exactly where Kevin lives. He doesn’t even wonder though, just walks happily by the darkened windows and quiet houses of his neighbors.
Mike accidentally trips over Frankie’s small bike while they’re walking up the sidewalk to the front door of the Jonas household. Kevin giggles and stops abruptly, his hand reaching up and fingers brushing along his bottom lip. His face looks surprisingly serious as he says “I can’t feel my lip. My lip is numb,” he looks at Mike, tips his head to the side and says “Let me see if I can feel yours” before stumbling into Mike’s space and clumsily knocking their mouths together. It’s all clumsy and Mike is frozen in place and Kevin’s not sure why he decided to kiss Mike and he’s starting to regret it but then Mike is moving his mouth against Kevin’s and the kiss is suddenly a lot less clumsy and a lot more wow. Kevin should probably be freaking out because this is his first kiss ever but he’s just really enjoying the feeling of Mike’s tongue against his own and hands digging into his hips and surprisingly soft hair between his fingers.
“What are you doing?!”
Kevin pulls away from Mike too quickly and he almost loses his balance, causing Mike to rest his hand firmly on Kevin’s back.
Nick is standing on the porch wearing basketball shorts and a disapproving frown on his face. His hand is on his hap and his foot is tapping impatiently. This makes Kevin giggle.
The look on Nick’s face becomes even more disapproving and he turns his attention to Mike, “Did you get him high?”
Kevin looks at Mike and tilts his head. “Am I high? I just thought I had a sugar rush.” He shrugs his shoulders and starts giggling again.
“It was so irresponsible of you to take advantage of him.”
Mike ignores the moody boy on the porch and looks at Kevin, “I didn’t know you had an older brother.”
“I don’t. He’s only twelve.”
Mike’s eyebrows raise and he looks at Nick again, as if he doesn’t quite believe it.
Kevin doesn’t remember a whole lot after this, but he knows that Nick drags him inside the house muttering all the while, and he wakes up the next morning with his jeans still on cuddling with a bag of Cheetos.
At breakfast Nick is still scowling at him but Joe is smirking, Nick had obviously told his brother of Kevin’s late night brownie adventure. He ate his pancakes quickly and makes the walk to school alone. He’s standing at his locker, grabbing the necessary books and straightening the slightly crooked mirror on his locker door when a voice from behind startles him.
“Hey, kid.”
Kevin whips around, notebook clattering to the floor, to find none other than Mike Carden standing behind him, smirking. The blush creeps quickly up his neck and through his cheeks, embarrassment blazing across his skin. Kevin’s eyes dart about, trying to find somewhere to fix his gaze, and he lands on his shoes, his very interesting non-smirking have never had their hands on his hips shoes.
“So, last night was interesting. I’ve never seen you so … outgoing.” Amusement is obvious in Mike’s tone and Kevin can’t help but feel even more embarrassed.
Kevin chances a glance at Mike’s face and bumbles out an apology, “I’m s-sorry. I’m not usually so f-forward and I’m sorry you h-had…”
Kevin’s words are cut off by the press of Mike’s lips on his own and whoa he didn’t even see Mike move close and this kissing thing seems to feel even better when Kevin is actually sober.
Mike pulls away, winks, and walks off leaving Kevin baffled, blushing, and grinning from ear to ear.
Kevin pretty much has a grin on his face the rest of the day and the majority of his fellow students remain ignorant of his existence. Jon Walker bumps him on the shoulder when they pass each other in the hallway, grinning and calling him Jonas, and Brendon Urie sits next to him in English and starts up a conversation about Ryan Ross’s hair, Kevin is mostly silent during this conversation but Brendon doesn’t seem to mind or notice. Mike likes to hide just inside of the bathroom so that he might grab an unsuspecting Kevin by the shoulder and accost him with his mouth. Kevin doesn’t really mind.
