Coming to an end.

..I wasn't aware that the finer things in life just aren't pratical.Life is short. Very, very short. Far too short to please anyone else; far too short to waste years in school; far too short to act like you're in high school forever. I don't regret growing up quickly for a moment... it's not that we can't all be kids every now and then, or that ( Read more... )

a lifespan cant be short. think about it, they are just unique, everyone has the right length of lifespan they were meant for, you cant alter it, your going to die when your going to die. therefore i dont think life is short, i think it may be just perfect.

It's opinion, really. I think life is very short, but perhaps it's because I keep so busy.

I just don't believe in fate or destiny, so your opinion just doesn't really jive with my own opinion... I can be capable of great things, but if you come shoot me in the face, I will never be able to make those great things happen.

The past repeats itself anyway.

Do you think if Hitler, or the entire world for that matter, would have read up on their history, it would have prevented World War II? Hardly.

And just for the record, this post was not a personal attack at you; you're certainly not the first person to tell me that my lack of interest in history is a bad thing.

Interestingly enough if Hitler had done his history he may have avoided attacking Russia. Which could have possibly won the war in his favour. I'm not really interested in debating outcomes of WWII but you can learn from the mistakes of others. You can also build upon the success of others but researching what has been done in the past.

I do agree that history should not be a majour point of study, but I think you should learn the history of whatever field interests you. Names and dates are more political history where as someone else may be more interested in the development of engineering at different points in time. History is necessary but more as a compliment to other areas of study.

Heh... I think the value of what we are learning is questioned in every single one of my classes. I wouldn't say just history, a lot of stuff we are learning is really going to be useless for us in the future.

For history, yes, the excuse always is so we won't make the same mistakes again. But I agree with what you said, had Hitler read up on some history, it wouldn't have stopped him from continuing on with his plans. He knew fully well what he was trying to do, and anyone today who thought like him would try and do it again. I think knowing History does help a bit though... mainly it tells us how NOT to react so situations. Bad things aren't gonna stop happening from reading history, all we can do is avoid the reactions people made to bad things already in history.

So yeah, I think history should be more useful than that to waste so much of my life learning it. School too. My life is being drained from it. It's very depressing.

I would disagree strongly that studying history, and I understand you are not talking about the specific subject, is a waste of our time or lifespan. Study in all fields, which may or may not involve going to school, expands our minds and allows us to critique that which we can and cannot observe. I really don’t believe that learning not to accept the status quo is ever a waste of time. Sometimes it takes one the remainder of one’s life to actually make sense of that which one has learned. From that perspective I think spending 40% of one’s life in preparation is productive. It’s just one opinion and I hope it can offer some guidance.

Well, I appreciate your opinion, I just simply disagree. I do believe in challenging the status quo; I just don't believe that is done through going to university and studying history, which is exactly what society says to do.
