>>For one philosophy paper, I copied almost verbatum what the prof has said, simply changing one idea or even two. I failed for departing too far from the reading.<<

Ditto, except I used ALOT of what my *TA* said,I used her summaryies and explaination of the reading in my essay... and she failed me because I didn't "understand the theory"

TAs make me laugh because they really don't understand what is going on, either.

I don't know how many TAs I've had mess up basic core theories that even I understood after first explanation in lecture.

Are you suggesting that those people doing the marking at your school are somehow more leniant than those at mine?

Are you suggesting that I got the mark I deserved?

Or did I miss your point altogether?

I didn't do any work at all in Craven's class and I averaged 94 on all of my essays last year.

No, with Craven, I didn't get the marks I deserved at all.

It seems to me that there is a major flaw with universities, and that is the presence of TAs. They come in such a wide range. There are those TAs that go easy on all first-years and give good grades without even reading their submitted assignments. Then there are those who seem to get off on giving bad marks to first years.

so.. TAs are essentially high school teachers, then?

Not even. TAs are people with no experience that evaluate the work of university students to save the professors effort. They get paid to do this, as well, so it's an easy way for people who couldn't care less to pay for their own education.

At least high school teachers have to get a degree in education.

um i disagree.
i think some of them care, some of them want to be profs.
sure i don't like some of my TA's but i think they mark fairly.
Well at least in all the courses I take they all get together to go over marking to ensure that no one is marking harder than anyone eles.

I don't think there's such thing as marking without bias.

fortunetly in my course of study, all work is marked by the professors. it would anger me greatly to know that i'm paying exorbant amounts of money to attend college only to be graded by someone who's barely more qualified to teach than i.

Yes. Having said that, I'm sure you understand my position.
