..What does make you happy, Brent?

I stared blankly at this question for a good two minutes before I replied.

..Having the respect of my friends?Even after that amount of time, I still put my answer in the form of a question, since I really couldn't be sure of myself. Afterall, if I want the respect of my friends, why haven't I even tried to get ( Read more... )

It bothers me that the first time in weeks I've attempted to be a decent person, I was forgotten about. But the mistakes I make never seem to be forgotten.

it's like at zellers. if you make one customer happy, they'll tell one person. if you piss off one customer, they'll tell ten.

you have to stop worrying what people think about you, brent. live life for you, not someone else.

I never implied that anyone was holding my mistakes against me besides myself.

And if my previous statement about wanting the respect of my friends is accurate in describing what makes me happy, it would be necessary for me to gain the respect of those closest to me, no?

maybe i'll just stop commenting in your journal because it continually, without fail, makes me look like a stupid twat.

I don't think you're stupid. I appreciate the comments. And to be truthful, you are one of the few people that actually stimulates thought from me.

For that matter, you had complained earlier that I had never quoted you in my journal. When I finally do, I don't think you even noticed.

Let god judge us? (Intentional non-capitalization)

That's interesting, seeing as the last time I heard you mention god, you were complaining about how you thought church was a cult and terrible place. You even wrote a song about it.

I'm just wondering, do you actually believe there is a god judging us, or was that a spur of the moment comment that seemed like it fit into the point you were trying to make?

I watched Dogma earlier today, and that line made me think of the scene in which Loki (Matt Damon) is talking to the nun, and trying to convince her there is no god. How appealing is it to think there is some greater power above us that's watching and preventing us from letting our morality go? Or as Matt Damon puts it, god sits above like a parent to us all threatening, "Do it and I'll fucking spank you."

I quoted that exact line from Dogma in an earlier post about God.

No, I don't believe in God of the Bible. I used the example of God judging us to illustrate that the only person who really has to live with the choices we make is us. We can either live up to our own morals, or not; the choice shouldn't be any more complex than that.

I appreciate that.

However, even for people that are decent by nature, you have to remember that every now and then nature does peculiar things you don't expect it to.

i find it difficult to post a cohesive comment on many of your journal entries because they are either so vague i have nothing to say or they are specific to you, in which case i have nothing to say because i don't think i've had any influence on your life in the past five years.

i think you should post more journal entries dealing with social issues so that i can comment more, and pretend like i actually have something to say and am not speaking just to hear my own voice.

as an aside, i would simply like to point out that many people would rather die than think (Bertrand Russell). the fact that you are compelled to consider your actions and their rammifications earns you respect with the right people.

Thanks. That's really flattering, actually.

As far as social issues, I have been preoccupied. But yes, you are right, I should give some consideration to the world around me.
