She's On Duty: Looking out for an Action Hero(ine)

Okay. So. I've been thinking about heroines a lot for the last few weeks (months?), feeling this restless urge to see a woman hero kicking ass, like a need which I couldn't seem to fill ( Read more... )

She's On Duty sounds awesome. I'm going to have to try to dig up a copy for myself.

The list is short : Terminator 2, the Alien movies, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Tank Girl...

Yeah, that's pretty much the list. Heh. Right now on TV I am enjoying The Sarah Connnor Chronicles, which stars Summer Glau as the "good" terminator and Lena Headley as Sarah, and they both get to kick a lot of ass.

A few other movie heroines that I liked:

Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith is not exactly a Hero because she's a morally ambiguous assassin, but she does kick major butt and lead an entire team of female assassins, so she's not playing second fiddle to anyone. In the same vein of not-a-hero-but-still-awesome is Uma Thurman in the Kill Bill movies.

Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight is a federal marshal tracking down an escaped bank robber. It's hard to say whether or not she's the main character; George Clooney stars, but there are lots of scenes from Lopez's point of view. Weird, I swear I replied to this, but it hasn't shown up...why, ElJay, why?

Anyway...thanks for the recommendations. I'm definitely going to check out T:SCC as soon as I can, but it's good to know its worth waiting for.

I Love Love Love Crouching Tiger, and Michelle Yeoh in general. She is amazing. The only thing I am hesitant about actually is Planet Terror, 'cause I am in general a big wuss when it comes to gore. I can barely watch Shaun of the Dead, but I've heard so many interesting interpretations of PT, and Death Proof, that I want to see them despite the crazy blood 'n' guts stuff. I will just have to overcome my wussiness.

I got your first reply in my email! LJ is just being cranky.

Skip Planet Terror because of the gore, but don't miss Death Proof. It only has one really gruesome scene (body parts flying) and you'll actually know when it's coming by what's going on in the plot, so you can close your eyes (which is what I did!). There's a lot of violence in the movie after that, but virtually no gross-out gore scenes.
